Harper Anderson is Jenny Humphrey with a side of snark and a whole lot of funny. Little Black Dresses, Little White Lies is the perfect cure for your Gossip Girl hangover and the laugh out loud inside look at trying to fit in to Manhattan’s elite journalism world is seriously scandalous.
Little Black Dresses, Little White Lies is hilarious. Small town girl Harper hops on the magical journey to the height of gossip and fashion as an “It Girl” dating blogger, the only problem is, her dating experience amounts to less than a few sloppy make outs. Her struggles to balance this persona as a know-how, expert dater who is both chic and feminist is embarrassing in the best way and super creative. The scenarios alone are enough to laugh for hours. Get ready to highlight on your e-reader because these one-liners are the best insults and crazy crafty catchphrases.
Harper is fighting hard to learn how to date and who she wants to be. She wants to be a real journalist and she makes mistakes, but one thing she learns is how to be brave, ballsy, and an all out go-getter. She eschews her inner scaredy cat and puts herself on the line. She gets into weird, disturbing, and outright comical situations and there is NEVER a dull moment. If you love things like Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl, and The Carrie Diaries this might just be your next favorite.
Harper’s personality is strong and her voice makes the story read like journal entries. You’ll want to follow her to the ends of the Earth just to see what happens next. At the same time, she’s surprisingly down to Earth and real. She feels like the girl next door despite the insanity that is her life.
Secondary characters are interesting and each have delightfully crafted personalities that suggest inner depth and strong beliefs. They should all have their own books. I want to read them.
Romance is eclectic and bold. It’s made up of downright painful moments of acute embarrassment and disbelief at just how bad dates can get, but also CHEMISTRY galore and that natural ease that comes from truly connecting with someone on a deep, spiritual level. There’s a variety of romance, and ways that people can fall in infatuation, lust, and love.
There are so many quirky little things that I found myself marveling over, like the seriousness of Bark Mitzvahs and Pug Prom, color me surprised and delighted. Refreshing, fun, and a wonderful read.
