syn Piper thinks Owen Vincent is a tool. Once they finish up with their internship she never wants to see him again.

Piper James’ first year at Whitney Briggs is starting off great, new friends, a potential sorority, and plenty of guys to choose from. Once she secures a spot in Alpha Chi, she’ll have the greatest freshman year on record.

But it just takes one look at the Alpha Chi “hit list” of things she needs to do to get in and she know there’s trouble—and trouble’s name is Owen Vincent.

Taming a player sounds impossible. Owen is the only player she knows and he certainly fits the bill, cocky, too many notches to count on his bedpost, and an aversion to relationships.

Making Owen believe she wants him is pretty low, even if this entire fling is just a means to an end. But now she can’t stop thinking about him. Yeah, he thinks he’s God’s gift to women, but now a part of her is kind of starting to agree. Girls are still dripping all over him like honey. Piper thinks there’s no way he’d be interested in a commitment with her. Maybe Alpha Chi isn’t what she wants. Maybe it’s Owen?

It’s a brand new year at Whitney Briggs and things are about to get wild.

TAMED by Adria Wade
A Huntress Spin-off Novel
Genre: Paranormal Romance
syn
He had no idea what I did…the hurt that I caused. The pain that tore me to pieces, reminding me of that night. I was the self-destructive, wild child, with a haunted past who ruined lives and pushed people away. I was out of control and no good for him, but he still looked at me as if I was light when all I was, was darkness. His strange, unique, orange eyes lingered on me, as if he could see deep into my soul. There was a calmness that settled in me whenever he was near, taming the wild beast that I had become. Eli wanted me, Paige Jacobs, and there was no escaping him.

Until I met Silas.

There was something about him that drew me to him; something in his eyes that mesmerized me. He was beauty and perfection wrapped up in one, and I was drunk in lust. He was like a magnet, pulling me right in, and I was completely trapped in his gaze, unable to look away. Even though I was warned of the dangers that came with his kind, I found myself getting sucked into his mysterious and seductive world.

I was falling for both supernatural creatures, who would stop at nothing to have me, and in the end, one of us wasn’t making it out alive.

Excerpt     I then saw Andie, frantic and crying, shove the drapes to the side and begin to run out of the booth when Ellis grabbed her by the arm and yanked her back in.

I gasped as my stomach dropped. “Andie!”
I shoved past the crowd on the dance floor, trying to get to her as fast as I could. Oh, God. Andie. He was hurting her! I knew there was something off with him. I should have went with my gut feeling and kept Andie away from him.
No screams came from behind the drapes as I neared the booth. I pulled the drapes back, and a scream soared through my windpipes as I jumped back from fear and total shock. Andie was in his arms, and his lips were enclosed around her shoulder as blood ran down her back. My head was spinning with so many thoughts. My mind couldn’t even begin to comprehend why he was biting her.
His eyes, so cold and devoid of emotion, bore into mine as he moved his mouth off her shoulder and threw her down in the booth. My mouth fell open and I took a step back, panicked and hyperventilating. He had long, pointy teeth. Fangs that were coated in Andie’s blood, and I knew I was next. I had to get Andie and get the hell out of there.
As he lunged forward, I screamed and swung my hand, slapping him in the face, but my hit did no good to fend him off. As his hand flew up to strike me, I moved out of harm’s way, ducking and running behind him, just escaping his wrath. My shaking hands grabbed the centerpiece from the table and turned around to strike him. Just as I was about to smash it over his head, his quick reflexes were way faster than my own as he grabbed the vase and with one effortless squeeze of his hand, the vase smashed into pieces. I brought my knee up, aiming for his groin, but he caught my leg. I gasped as he was suddenly knocked into me and I fell back on the table. Silas, with fury on his face, came up behind Ellis, grabbing him by the hair and throwing him back on the floor. As Ellis began to stand, Silas kicked him in the face, his head flying to the side as I heard his neck break.
My frantic heart slammed against my chest as I took in a breath, trying to calm myself when all I wanted to do was scream and cry. My brain had yet to accept what I had just been through.
As Silas began to search Ellis’ pockets, I went to Andie. She was lying face down and, as much as I was afraid to touch her, I knew I had to see if she was still alive. I didn’t want to face losing another friend. My eyes flooded with tears as I looked down at my friend, lying there unmoving and helpless. As I hesitantly reached down to feel her pulse, Silas grabbed my arm and spun me around, facing him.
“You have to leave.” His voice was urgent and demanding.
He kept his hand clasped around my arm while he pulled me out of the booth, forcing me to walk. He was taking me away from Andie. I couldn’t let him. I had to get her out of here.
“No!” I tried to pry my arm out of his hold, but his grip was too strong and secure to free myself.
He paid no attention to me while he continued to drag me through the crowded club. It wasn’t until after we were outside did he let go of me. Furious and upset that he took me away from Andie when she needed me the most, I slapped him, feeling the sting from the contact on my hand.
“That’s my best friend in there!”
I turned around to walk back inside when he gripped my arm and pushed me up against the wall, his eyes ablaze with frustration and anger as he scowled.
     “Do you want to die?”
“I don’t care. I’m not leaving my best friend in there!”
“Your best friend is dead. I’m not letting you go back in there. The only reason you survived was because he claimed you.” He grabbed the necklace and held it up. “You were his property. Not to be eaten by anyone but him. You were the bait swimming in an ocean filled with sharks.”
So that was what this club was. A place for vampires to lure their prey to and feed off them.
I shook my head and looked down as dread poisoned my insides. I knew Ellis wasn’t a good guy and I did nothing to stop us from going with him. I shoved the feeling aside and let her convince me that I was only being paranoid because of what I had been through last night. I went along, thinking that I could protect her if I needed to, and failed her. Now my best friend was dead.
The knife that was embedded in my heart was slowly twisting, sending waves of pain throughout my body as it slammed me in the pit of my stomach. My gut felt heavy, filled with so much misery that it hurt to even breathe. I wanted to cry. I could feel the pressure to release my sorrows build, so I swallowed the pain, refusing to let myself cry in front of Silas.
The door to the club swung open and two men, one with sandy blond hair and the other brown with the same blue eyes as Ellis, stormed out of the club.
“What do you think you’re doing? You know no humans are spared here, so hand her over now!” the brunette said.
Silas exhaled as he looked behind him then averted his gaze back to me. “Two on one; I better change for this fight.”
Confused, I shook my head. Change into what? “What?”
My eyes widened as his eyes turned blood red and a pair of small horns came out of his temples. I jumped, gasping in horror as bat like wings flew out from behind his back. They were black and green. Just like his hair. What in the hell was he? I pressed myself up against the wall even more than I already was, afraid of the creature that stood before me. I had to remind myself that he was the good guy and I wasn’t his target.

ExcerptSuddenly, my ears buzz and go blank, blocking the noise around me, almost like my head has been plunged underwater.

Cale looks at me sideways. I shake my head, trying to knock the silence free.

“Is this what you wish for?” a voice booms in my head deep and smoky, every syllable alive like the air has been awakened from a deep sleep.

I turn around, knowing that distinctive voice, that spicy aroma. “You,” I say, staring straight into eyes the color of midnight, feeling myself already simmering in the scent of roasted hazelnuts. Bird Lady. Her Mohawk hair is as majestic as before, maybe even more like a jay’s tuft now. With a long, black dress that bleeds into cobalt blue at her feet, she blends into the crowd like she’s always been part of it. My eyes go straight to her bare neck, where her dark skin glimmers gold under the strobe lights above.

Is she here to reclaim her lost charm?

Before I have a chance to confess the whereabouts of her necklace, however, the room freezes with everyone in it—everyone except for Bird Lady and me.

I scan left then right, wondering if we are the only two aware that the room has been placed on pause. Cale still holds his drink to his lips, a grin stuck on his face. Fritz is mid-action, in the middle of wiping off the counter, his fingers clamped around a cloth. The music has even stopped, along with the

hum of voices and the clanking of silver on china. I wait for an explanation, wait for the world to start up again . . . for music to ignite from the grand piano tucked into the corner beneath the winding staircase, or for the murmur of conversations to begin again.

But everything seems stuck.

The glass cone buzzes in my hands, the only thing here that seems real. My mind is blank; for some reason I can’t think of anything except the Bird Lady. I close my eyes, waiting for a cue . . . for something to click in my mind and tell me what to do next, other than remain here in a sea of paralyzed limbs.

When I open my eyes again, Bird Lady is still staring at me.

“What’s happening?” I ask her, my voice carrying across the room to the other side then bouncing off the wall and back at me.

“Look,” she says, pointing at the crowd. “You’ll see in a minute.”

I spin around and scan the faces, looking for something. She steps backward, as if giving me space. The glass cone slips from my hand and hits the counter as the piercing sound of glass bouncing off stone fills the room. I’m about to demand some kind of explanation, but my words die on my tongue the

instant I recognize, even from this distance, the profile of a girl standing in the center of the crowd, at the center of attention.

The girl . . . is me.

A prettier version of me, but still, me.

I rush past Bird Lady toward the crowd, but halt at the sound of her voice.

“Don’t get too close,” she warns. “It’s only a glimpse. She will vanish if you push it.”

“A glimpse . . . ,” I repeat, wondering how I am seeing what I’m seeing.

Seeing me.

Yet there I am—wedged in between James and Brecke, a pink bubbly in my hand and what looks like a laugh ready to burst from my mouth.

My nose is different—small and ski-jump perfect, my long, dark hair smoother and stick-straight, still resting slightly above my elbows like it is now. I’m wearing a black halter dress, the taffeta skirt reaching all the way to my toes, my shoulders bare. The whole group is there beside me and I am at the center, the look in my eyes one of belonging, of being adored.

Of being a lucky one.

“Is this what you want?” Bird Lady says again, her voice everywhere, somewhere in the air, floating around me.

My breath is gone, my body is immobile, but my mind still spins. “I don’t know,” I answer, acutely aware of the sour feeling still twisting my stomach after my encounter with James and the lucky ones.

“You have to know. Some time or other.” Bird Lady glides even closer to me until her cinnamon scent starts to burn my eyes. “What will you give?” she asks.

“What?” I ask, confused, tears from my burning eyes blurring my vision.

“Nothing is free, my dear. What’s your offer?”

“I . . . I don’t know,” I say, my mind stuck in this fog. My eyes losing focus. My gaze falling back on the other me—the girl in the middle of the crowd—the girl who has everything.

“It’s your choice. You have until midnight to start the clock.”

“What clock?” “The necklace. Make your offer and put the charm around your neck, child. When you awake, it will have begun.”

To inspire.

She moves from one artist to the next, never staying long enough to get attached. But all she wants is a different life— a normal one. She’s spent thousands of years living lie after lie, and now she’s ready for something real.

Sweet, sexy, and steady, Wilder Bell feels more real than anything else in her long existence. And most importantly… he’s not an artist. He doesn’t want her for her ability. But she can’t turn off the way she influences people, not even to save a man she might love. Because in small doses, she can help make something beautiful, but her ability has just as much capacity to destroy as it does to create. The longer she stays, the more obsessed Wilder will become. It’s happened before, and it never turns out well for the mortal.

Her presence may inspire genius.

But it breeds madness, too.

And check out the gorgeous cover for INFLICT, coming January 2016!Inflict -coverGoodreadssynWilder Bell made a dangerous bargain…

For a chance at love, he gave up his life.

History knew Kalliope as an ancient Greek muse, but to Wilder, she was simply the woman he wanted to fall asleep with every night and wake up next to every morning. He made a deal with Hades, but the only thing the Lord of the Underworld deals in is death. Now Wilder is wasting away in a cold and wretched afterlife, waiting for Kalli to come for him. She will come. He has to believe that. Because the alternative is worse than death.

Kalliope lived her entire existence knowing that she was both a blessing and a curse to anyone she encountered. Wilder was no different. She loved him, and she got him killed. Now to get him back, she’ll have to face a scheming god, a perilous task, and death itself. But before it’s done, the Underworld will take more from her than she ever thought possible.

To be made whole, all must first be lost.

synA world of chivalry and witchcraft…and the invaders who would destroy everything.

The North has invaded, bringing a cruel religion and no mercy. The ciudades-estados who have stood in their way have been razed to nothing, and now the horde is before the gates of Colina Hermosa…demanding blood.

On a mission of desperation, a small group escapes the besieged city in search of the one thing that might stem the tide of Northerners: the witches of the southern swamps.

The Women of the Song.

But when tragedy strikes their negotiations, all that is left is a single untried knight and a witch who has never given voice to her power. And time is running out.

A lyrical tale of honor and magic, Grudging is the opening salvo in the Book of Saints trilogy.int

  1. Throughout the story, Ramiro talks about the need to prove himself and earn his beard. What does earning his beard signify to Ramiro and to the Colina Hermosa?

Great question! Earning your beard means you’re a man and all the things that go along with that, like courting a woman and speaking in council. It’s rather a male-dominated society in some ways, such as government and the military excluding women. I purposely made it rather old-fashioned and against my own ideals so it would contrast with the much more feminist witches. (A great source of conflict.) But being able to wear a beard is a badge of honor in Colina Hermosa. To be without a beard, is to be a priest or not a full member of society. It’s what every boy aspires to, though most methods aren’t as difficult to achieve as surviving your first hand-to-hand battle as Ramiro strives to do.

Plus, as a bonus, I can use the beards’ description to reflect the characters within to some extent. There’s just all sorts of potential with beards.

  1. In the story, the characters have habit of addressing prayers to specific organs and parts of their body, can you explain the significance?

I love this question.

I wanted something along the lines of Catholics crossing themselves. It’s a great way for a character to express emotion without the author having to tell how they are feeling.

In Medieval times, medicine was rudimentary. People believed different humors in the body led to different emotions. It wasn’t hard to run with that and put it into this world: The ancient saint, Santiago, taught his people to clear their bodies of unwanted emotion by touching mind, heart, liver and spleen. The mind for clear thinking, the heart to encourage love, honor, courage and positive emotions, the liver represents where anger breeds, and the spleen covers worry and anxiety. Touching different parts of the body shows what emotion a character wants to encourage or dispel.

  1. Are the Knights based on others in history?

My first instinct is to say they are not. But as I pondered this question deeper, I must confess that they are probably a lot like one of my favorite books by Alexander Dumas, The Three Musketeers. I was most likely unconsciously influenced by that book. My pelotón works exclusively for the Alcalde. The musketeers worked for their king. There are other pelotónes for each council member and for the church, who could be rivals. There is a core group of four individuals within the pelotón that is featuring in the opening chapters, much like in The Three Musketeers.

You caught me on this question and made me notice what I hadn’t before.

  1. There are several detailed battle scenes and descriptions of weapons/armor. Which century and how much research went into these scenes?

The nice thing about fantasy compared to historical fiction is that you can mesh an amalgam of time periods and details and call it yours. Give just a little bit of description, then the reader can picture it any way they want. World building is just so much fun. So I’d say I took a mixed grouping of military items and folded it into my creation.

I did do some research on armor to find the proper names for every piece. And I’ve seen some armor up close when I went to England. I also visited a Spanish Mission style church in Arizona for help with the architectural details. And very usefully, I found a list of Spanish given names from the 1000-1200s. Besides that I studied plants found in the desert and in swamps. I also studied up on horses and parts of a saddle.

There is just various research that comes into play at different times. Including a swamp stomp field trip where we waded through a bog so that I know how it feels to walk in an actual swamp.

  1. There’s a distinct break between the Northerners and the people of Colina Hermosa. Not only physically but in terms of legends. Could you explain some of the key differences that pit them against each other?

The main difference would be in their religions and tolerance. The people of Colina Hermosa were desert nomads until their saints convinced them to build cities. Because of that, each of their cities is a separate government, just as they had been separate tribes. They trade and work together to some extent, but prefer to remain uninvolved in each other’s affairs. They had religious martyrs in the past and have grown out of it. They’ve evolved and have a live and let live philosophy.

While the Northerners, on the other hand, believe in live and let kill. Their religion and god is based on conquest and bloodlust, and they don’t plan on standing still. Like the Borg, they stand for the collective. Unfortunately for Colina Hermosa, they have a new leader with a special interest in the desert people, and the army to back that up.

  1. The swamp witches are feared and known as anything from cannibals to violent seductresses. What makes the witches so pervasive and are they anything like the rumors?

There’s often a grain of truth in rumors. But how large that is remains to be seen. I’d say Ramiro and his party are somewhat skeptical, but also wary. They are prepared for anything, including for truth to be worse than rumor.

  1. What does it mean to be a “Woman of Song”?

To be a Woman of the Song is to be alone. (I stole that from Galadriel and Lord of the Rings.) A Woman of the Song keeps herself and her magic away from others. They are independent, even from their own kind. They want nothing to do with the male dominated societies around them. The one thing they have in common is the desire to continue to pass along their magic to fresh generations by having daughters. And if they have to live in a swamp to keep isolated, that’s what they do.

  1. What are some main themes of The Grudging and what do you want to reader to take away from it?

I think the title expresses the theme that people can change. That your first impression of someone isn’t always correct. And how you judge another person in relation to yourself can be more controlled by your expectations than from truth.

Like in all my books, there are themes of honor and where it should lead you. How much reliance on it is too much? Whether family should come before duty. This, of course, are things every person must decide for themselves.

But what I hope most is that a reader relates to the characters and just plain finds pleasure from the story. If I can add some unexpected elements, that’s always an added bonus!

Thanks for hosting me on YA Book Madness. Those were a really great set of questions!
