I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognize that reading
was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of
the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am
essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practice
given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers,
my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a
fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of
each others loves – it works wonderfully…

My heart is currently broken in two. One half
resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still
longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer
downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been
transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha,
beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly
inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands – I shall forever
remain cross-eyed.

cooltext1602390596 copyFen’s life is on track—she works, she studies, she pays her rent—until a gorgeous guy points a gun at her and demands that she choose how she wants to die. What the hell? When a teenage boy, Luke, comes to her rescue, she survives, but escape won’t be so easy.

Luke’s sexy older brother, Kaio, offers to help her, but his protection simmers with unnerving undercurrents. The brothers have secrets and Fen has questions. Who are they? How did they find her? And why was she targeted for murder in the first place?

When Fen and Luke are forced to run for their lives, Luke spirits Fen down into an enchanting underwater city. But every enchantment has its dark edges. Caught in tides of romance, fear, and a plot to destroy humanity, Fen must look deep within herself to find the strength and courage she’ll need to stay afloat in an amazing new world.

cooltext1607795130 copy

  • The back story is an actual history of the people down to miniscule details such as inherent personality types. Everything is meticulously plotted and the explanations behind the dwindling population is both mysterious and probable. Unlike any Atlantis story I’ve come across.
  • Plot twist.
  • Gaelith is a fierce, blunt, intelligent woman who has a poised air about her. She’s full of passion for what she does and wields her magic into beautiful art. She is patient and kind with Fen, helping her to adjust and is a grounded example for Fen.
  • Luke is like a playful puppy. He’s flirty and gentleman-like all at once. He’s so genuine and carefree with Fen, it’s hard not to swoon over him. He’s full of light and laughter, he brings a cheerful element to the plot. Luke is attentive, sometimes reckless, but does everything from the heart, and though boyish is incredibly sexy.
  • Kaio is the dark, lush bad boy that’s as brooding as he is mysterious. His take charge attitude and few words are magnetic. Kaio says so much with a look and always has a plan. He’s the mastermind behind everything.
  • The action scenes, the role of nanos and how they function as magic is so creative and pretty epic. The way matter bends to whim and tattoos can leap from skin and become real was fascinating to read. The chaos and rage quickly escalated as the battle took place. Everything seems to happen in an instant.
  • Semi-Con: The cover is beautiful. The combination of colors, the play on lighting, and the girl’s curious pose are perfect. I loved that the cover was not set underwater and that the focus is more on the girl (Fen) and her enchantment with this magical world. What I really dislike is the text. The colors are garish and clash with the overall image.

  • Fen’s constant use of expletives got to be a bit much. Every other word was a curse and apart from that and her love of books, it detracted from any true personality development.
  • The middle was muddled and slow. The first pages of the book were enthralling, you were left dying to know whether Fen would survive the attack. The adrenaline was amazing, there was just the right amount of hysteria and anxiety to keep you guessing. The ending was explosive. Between the massive reveal and wicked fight scene, it was all action and marvelous description. After the first main scene, the story kind of fizzled out.
  • There was a suggestive love triangle (the only thing more frustrating than a predictable love triangle is one that is teased and never happens). SPOILERS STOP NOW IF YOU PREFER: The entire time, Fen is extremely attracted to both Kaio and Luke and NOTHING. There’s a lot of angst and dirty thoughts but nothing significant comes of it and the whole book is spent eagerly waiting for something to happen…anything…nothing but disappointment and false hope.

Elena lives and writes in a suburb North of Los Angeles. She has never lived anywhere besides California which is probably a good thing since she hates being cold and is terrified to drive in the snow. She loves being a wife and a mother to her three kids and three dogs, although really the bulldog is the fourth child who has never matured beyond the toddler stage.

A self-proclaimed nerd, she has been writing since she was a child. She has only recently, however, come out of the closet about this to her family and friends. They now understand better, but not completely, why she talks about characters in stories as if they are real people.

Q & A with Tessa Marie

cooltext1694079753 copy

1. What do you think the future for Young Adult literature looks like? What do you think is missing? What are you looking forward to?

Such a great question and at the same time such a hard question to answer because it’s constantly reinventing itself and evolving. I definitely see more diversity in YA books in the future. It’s something that I think is missing and I personally would love to see more of. As far as what I’m looking forward to I’d have to say the next big trend. Trends fascinate me and they also encourage me to read out of my comfort zone.

2. You write both YA and NA. How much of your work comes from personal experience?

I’d say a little less than half is from personal experience. All my characters have little quirks that were inspired by my own or by someone I know. The stories themselves I take bits and pieces from personal experience, but also from stories I’ve heard on the news and my imagination. Home is Where You Are, Anna talks about a gum wall. In the town I grew up in there is a gum wall. A place where people just put their chewed gum. It’s disgusting, but it’s something I remember from my childhood and it’s still there. Also in the book, Anna’s mom is an antique dealer. My mom collects antiques and I grew up in a house with some really cool things. The wooden pogo stick that is mentioned is something my mom still has hanging on the wall and I used to jump on it when I was a kid.

3. How do you come up with your characters?
Most of my characters come to me. They just start talking in my head and as I sit down and write them they begin to develop.

4. What genres are you most comfortable writing? Have you ever thought about paranormal?
Contemporary romance definitely. I have thought about writing paranormal and I’m actually currently working on one. It’s massively different from what I’m used to and completely out of my comfort zone, but I’ve been having fun with it.

5. What are some of your favorite books to read? Favorite TV shows?
I have so many! Anything Sarah Dessen, Simone Elkeles, Toni Blake, Susan Mallery, J. Lynn, Erin McCarthy’s True series, I just read Wallbanger by Alice Clayton and loved it! TV Shows, if you follow me on FB you would know I”m a Dawson’s Creek Fanatic. I also love Vampire Diaries, The Fosters, True Blood, Gilmore Girls, Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, Hart of Dixie and I’m going to stop now 🙂

6. Tell me about your books and your process.
I write YA and NA contemporary romance. You can check them all out on my Goodreads page. I don’t have a set process. It changes with every book. I have a full time job so writing is usually done at night, the weekends or my lunch break. I squeeze it in wherever I can. I’ve become Pinterest obsessed, so now before I start writing a new story I create a Pinterest board. Visuals always help me when I’m writing and before Pinterest I actually pinned pictures to cork boards.

7. Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?
When I started writing seriously I was reading Alyson Noel’s Evermore series. I had checked out her website and she had advice for writers and it was BIC. Butt in chair. I think that is the best advice. You can have a million great ideas, but unless you force yourself into that chair and start writing them, you’ll never turn that idea into something great. Even if you think it’s awful just keep going. You won’t publish everything you write and that’s okay. Some times you need to get those stories out of your system before you can find the one. Also critique partners. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. They are my support team, cheerleaders, and help make my stories the best they can be.

8. Do you have any upcoming releases?
Home is where You Are will be out September 30th and the third book in the Beds series, Lonesome Beds and Bumpy Roads, will be out later this year.

Thank you so much for having me!!!

***I received this book as a gift in exchange for an honest review and in participation with Mark My Words Publicity.

Christina Mercer is quickly becoming one of my go to authors. This is only the second book I’ve read that she’s written but both I read straight through. Each book has rich mythology that enthralls and enraptures. The overarching plots are peppered with these beautiful, magical glimpses of the past that are saturated in adoration for nature and its creatures. If you’re looking for a read that will reawaken your childhood, bring back the whimsy, and the wide-eyed wonder of the Earth’s secrets, this is it.

  • What Christina Mercer does masterfully is build a believable world of magic that’s full of quirky beings and tragic truths laced with horrible sacrifice. The intertwined legends with present day link the two time periods seamlessly, solidifying the sense of fate and prophecy. Each of the creatures, the fae, the dwarves, the wraiths are all composed of stunning details and vibrant personalities.
  • The role of nature is jaw-dropping. The way the trees have their own stories and are full of powerful symbolism whisks the reader away too another world, one of emotion and intention, where things that are normally silent, like the trees, have life and a voice. Lia’s bond with nature is flawlessly written. Lia identifies and understands the elements, she wields their power in partnership with her own strengths and makes natural magic.
  • The story is unexpected, fueled by dark whispers of the past, half-truths, secrets, and startling reveals. The plot is like a puzzle, each piece fits together but you can’t see or find the components all at once. When the puzzle is complete, all of the layers combine to form something profound; love and family grant passion and the strength of a warrior to overcome all obstacles.
  • Brume illustrates more than anything that within darkness there is also light. The world is sometimes light and airy, alive with peaceful, playful magic of the fae, and others it is vile, toxic and full of greed. Brume is a world within a world and each area is meticulous, full of specific creatures and elements of nature. Lia’s insistence on calling the herbs and trees by their old, magical names places her as a liminal character, caught between the world of her present and the talents she inherited from her grandmother via Brume.
  • The dwarves are intriguing. Their traditional roles as creatures of metallurgy and precious stones is there but there’s also something sinister and twisted beneath the surface. Their lifestyle is linked to their work. The gems in their beards, the way they sprinkle them in their food like salt is fascinating to read.
  • Lia is a fiery, determined protagonist out to risk everything for her loved ones. She fights through her fear and put herself on the line to wield a power she didn’t even know existed within herself. Her journey to gaining her true potential is awesome to watch unfold. Lia grows into an even more magnetic character. Her heart is pure, her goal to save the magical past is a promise. She takes all of her set backs in stride and she’s otherworldly bursting with the knowledge of her grandmother.
  • There are scattered riddles throughout that are not only lyrical but fun to read.
  • I appreciated that while there was a love story that it was subtle. It did not star in the book or detract from the main story. It was cute 🙂

  • The battle scene started out strong, it was terrifying, full of the raw adrenaline that leaves you unsure if the protagonist will escape but wrapped in hope. Unfortunately, the fight sort of sputtered out suddenly and turned extremely quickly.
  • Some of the descriptions of the food preparation and the combination of the herbs were lengthy and lagged.

Blog Tour & Review: Whisper-Heather Hildenbrand

Whisper by Heather Hildenbrand

New Adult Paranormal Fantasy

Goodreads/Amazon/Barnes & Noble

The Cherokee believe when a person dies, their soul is reborn. Life is repeated. An endless cycle of lessons to be learned, love to be found, destiny to be fulfilled. For the past six months, in every flower, every bird, I’ve imagined my parents, relieved of their human forms.

Now, after five months at the Skye View Wellness Center, it was summer. A time for parties and friends, but that’s the last thing I want to do. So when my best friend Erin convinces me to attend a bonfire at Eagle Point, I can’t handle the crowd full of sympathetic stares or drunken class clowns who would use my tragedy as a way into my heart – or my pants. The solitude of the woods offers an escape, until I stumble upon a boy, unconscious and bleeding, his pockets stuffed not with identification but with poetry illustrating the beauty of dying. I’ve seen enough death. I will not leave this boy’s side.

Even after he wakes, when the only thing he can remember are visions of events that haven’t happened yet…

  • There’s something about Dylan and Whisper that’s both poetic and whimsical. Their chemistry transcends time and space and blossoms into this perfect love. It’s beautiful, breathtaking and enough to make you believe in the power of true love. Dylan and Whisper are stubborn, they fight, they tease each other but underneath everything is fierce devotion and the sense that their feelings run so much deeper and span so much longer than just this time period. Their love is the sort of epic that inspires and grants hope. I adored how Dylan and Whisper were together, the heat between them was undeniable but the easy, understanding way they interacted and could just be with each other in silence was so much more.
  • The Cherokee legends and lifestyle, the rituals, association with animals and their beliefs were simultaneously a history lesson and teleportation into another life. Everything was so detailed and aptly described that the connection between the characters and Cherokee magic was not only believable but seemed natural. The small stories were snapshots into the culture and it was so cool how everything was interconnected and linked to the cyclical function of reincarnation/life.
  • There were several surprises, the kind that leave you mouth agape wondering how you could have possibly missed something that big.
  • Whisper’s bond with the animals is incredibly endearing. The way her need to save parallels her loss is heartbreaking and displays such poignant compassion. Dolly is hilarious, she has such fabulous attitude even if she has no lines.
  • Dylan is sexy, mysterious, and compelling. The way he ceaselessly researches and endeavours to protect Whisper is enough to wi book boyfriend status. He doesn’t have many flirty lines but when they’re there, it’s scorching hot. The romantic scenes between Whisper and Dylan are the kind you read over and over again. 🙂
  • Whisper is broken but not beaten. It’s really enriching just experiencing Whisper’s thoughts and emotions as she tries to find herself again after the devastating loss she’s suffered and to have a curse and everything else thrown in with that it’s astonishing she didn’t crack under the stress. Whisper has worked so hard to overcome her grief, to regain her chance at living and there’s nothing more inspirational that a woman who has faced the absolute worst and grown stronger from it, clinging to hope and not letting defeat rule her.

  • Some sections were a little slow and seemed to drag.
  • Something that really irked my was how Whisper dealt with assault. At first, it seemed like her reactions were perfect, she fought, she escaped, she did everything in her power to save herself from terrible situations that will make your skin crawl, however, when she is actually physically injured, she does nothing and had doubts. I wanted to strangle her. It just seemed like her logic was skewed.
  • Erin was an inbetween character, as were a few of the secondary characters. They have cameo appearances and then disappear. While Erin was there for Whisper when she needed her most, there’s not enough of her to form a strong opinion for like or dislike.

The gold dress was both beautiful and evil all at once.

I stood in front of the mirror for twenty minutes, frowning until my face hurt and contemplating how Erin would react if I showed up to my party wearing jeans and a sweatshirt instead.

My reflection reminded me of the vision, and even though Dylan said it wasn’t this exact dress, it felt close enough—the shimmery, silky material that felt like water in my hands, the way it pooled at my feet even with my strappy heels. It was as if the dress itself held the ability to make that vision a reality simply by wearing it. But I had nothing else.

I told myself it was my own fears reflecting back. Fancy fabric couldn’t manifest a destiny any more than a person could fight it. But, although the sun still blazed with late afternoon heat, the day felt ominous. Or maybe it was me.

Taregan hadn’t made a play—hell, he hadn’t made a peep—since our parking lot encounter. That’d been days ago. I wanted to find out whether his blood ritual had worked, but Dylan refused to contact him. For any reason. Every time I brought it up, his fury worked its way into his tense jaw and then his pursed lips and I gave up. The warrior wouldn’t budge.

Time, on the other hand, only moved forward. And now we were here, my birthday.

Dylan was in his room, supposedly showering, though I’d checked on him twice already, and he’d been standing in the middle of his room, eyes glued to another history book he’d brought up from the stacks. A last-minute loophole search. So far, nothing.

I strained my ears and thought I heard the sound of water running. I’d give him ten more minutes and then check again.

Thinking of Dylan, picturing his face, was enough to make me tremble. And it had nothing to do with Taregan or curses or anything beyond my own body’s lust thermometer. I locked my knees against the weakness that threatened as I thought back to the other night in the library. Hands and mouths exploring, asking, taking. There had been a moment, though brief, where nerves had threatened to shut me down. But then Dylan had removed his clothes and the way he looked in the soft light of the fire, his broad chest and satin shoulders, had taken my breath away. And given me a confidence only our kind of unerring love could. After that, it had been …

Was there a word for something that amazing?

Author of Across the Galaxy, Whisper, and the Dirty Blood series. I write, read, and fuss at my kids. Oh, and I do laundry, lots of laundry. I’m pretty good at it, too. Sometimes I even read WHILE doing laundry – and fussing at my kids. I’m a multi-tasker.

For more information on my books, release dates, or just general stalker material, um, I mean FAN material, visit my website. I love hearing from readers!

Likes and dislikes? I love vintage tees, hate socks with sandals, and if my house was on fire the one thing I’d grab is my Amazon Fire TV! (oh yeah, I’m a fan of puns.)
