From NYT & USA Today Bestselling Author A.L. Jackson comes the next seductive, unforgettable Bleeding Stars Stand-Alone Novel…

Zachary Kennedy has never been known as a fighter, but he’ll never regret fighting for her…

I’m Zee Kennedy.
Quiet. Reserved. Predictable.
When my brother died, everyone thought I was just the good guy who stepped up to take his place in the band.

No one knew what I was hiding. The one thing I’ve been fighting for.

For six years, I’ve never lost focus.

Not until one chance encounter with Alexis Kensington.

Now she’s become my greatest temptation.
I knew better than to touch her, but now that I’ve had a taste, I can’t get enough.
Her kiss becomes my air. Her body my salvation.

She needed a savior and somehow she became mine.

Taking her was a betrayal. But keeping her means risking everything.
One look at Alexis Kensington, and I know she’s worth the fight.
Will my past continue to keep me down or will I finally find the strength to pull myself up and Stand!

ExcerptHis voice was low. The word might have been a question had it not glided across my skin like familiarity and warmth. “Alexis.”

I barely nodded, my response a whisper as my heart fluttered and sped. “Alexis.”

His gaze dipped for a moment, tracing me head to toe. As if he needed reassurance I was here. Something about it felt so intimate and private, as if maybe when he’d chipped away that piece of my soul he somehow knew he held it, too.

“I hope it’s okay I’m here,” he said, forcing my attention back to his eyes.

A lump grew heavy in my throat and I swallowed around it, nodding as I tried to find my voice. “Of course it’s okay.”

Maybe I should have been hearing warning bells. A thousand caution flags tossed in the air and raining down around me. Because there was something about this brilliant boy that screamed trouble and mayhem. Undoubtedly, this man wore his own beautiful brand of destruction.

And I was the fool who always seemed to run straight for it. Diving right into the middle of it without having the first clue what was waiting for me.

“I’m Zachary Kennedy. Friends call me Zee,” he said, shifting on his feet as if he were wondering what he was doing here.

I could feel the pull of the soft smile at the side of my mouth. “I know who you are.”

“Is that so?” he asked. Something about it rang with a tease.

I nodded.

Of course I did. He was the drummer for one of the biggest rock bands in the world.

And I realized that probably put both of us at a disadvantage. No doubt he had women throwing themselves at him any time he walked off a stage or into a room. Wanting a taste of fame or maybe a name to drop, salivating over this boy simply for who he was.

It didn’t help he had to be the most gorgeous man I’d ever seen.

But this was different. The staggering need I felt to know him more. Not the boy pinned to Pinterest boards labeling him a sexy, tattooed bad boy. Not the boy splashed across the tabloids with their speculations and judgement.

The real man.

This man made up of flesh and bone. The man who rushed into an alley in the middle of the night to defend a complete stranger. The man who’d tenderly rocked me in his arms while I’d felt the controlled rage radiating from his body.

The one who now stood in my doorway, spinning my mind with how he could both look so powerful and vulnerable.

My insides shook, and I took a step back and widened my door. “Would you like to come in?”

A smile crept to his mouth that would be my complete undoing, this tug of full, soft lips framed by his beard. He tilted his head to the side. “You’re awful brave to be inviting a complete stranger into your house.”

I lifted my chin and met his gaze. “A complete stranger who put his life on the line. A stranger who stood between me and a gun. You could have died, and I very well might have if it wasn’t for you. Trust comes in a lot of forms, and I’m pretty sure you’ve already earned mine.”

Release Day Blitz & Giveaway: Imperfect Harmony by Raine Thomas

syn
A rock band. A reality show. The opportunity of a lifetime.

As the front man for The Void, lead singer Dane Archer has yet to achieve the success he craves. He hopes that will change when he’s approached about filming a reality show called House of Archer. All he and the band have to do is get some juicy footage while on their upcoming tour.

The problem? Archer’s life is a snoozefest. His parents are happily married, he’s never done drugs or gotten arrested, and he doesn’t get into fights with his band mates. He knows the show will fizzle and die before it ever hits the air, taking his dreams of worldwide fame along with it.

Unless…

If Archer can convince his best friend Lily to be on the show, he’s sure they’ll get all the compelling footage they need. Her life is filled with drama. Hell, she’s practically a reality show in her own right.

Archer’s willing to do whatever it takes to get Lily on board, even if it means charming her into being more than just friends. But when he finds himself falling for her, his seemingly simple plan gets complicated. Soon the line between reality and Reality TV begins to blur, leaving him wondering if achieving his dreams is worth all it might cost him.
Excerpt
“What are…Dane? What’s going on?” Lily asked as he climbed into the SUV behind her and closed the door.

“We’re going to talk.”

“I don’t want to talk.”

“That’s too damn bad.”

Her irritation disappeared in a blink of shock. He hadn’t infused the words with any heat, but it certainly wasn’t the response she had expected.

Neither of them said another word until Barney had seated himself behind the wheel. “Do you need anything before we depart, Mr. Archer?” he asked.

“No, Barney. Thanks.”

Barney nodded and pressed the button to raise the privacy shield between the front and back seats. Once they were moving, Dane turned back to Lily. Since she was glowering out the window, she saw his expression in the reflective surface. For some reason he looked amused over her behavior.

“Lily, nothing happened with Camilla,” he began.

She shrugged. “Why would I care?”

“Because I kissed you yesterday.” When she didn’t reply, he continued, “Do you really think so little of me that you believe I’d go from kissing you like that to pursuing another woman?”

She huffed out a sigh and finally met his gaze. “Of course I don’t think little of you, Dane. Honestly, I don’t know what to think right now.”

He looked relieved that she was speaking with him in a calm manner rather than chewing his head off. It made her regret going out of her way to avoid and ignore him all morning. She had been acting like a middle schooler. He was her best friend. He deserved to have his say.

“Look, Lily, I know I screwed up last night. I should have mentioned I had that interview so you knew to wait for me. I was more concerned about keeping Camilla happy so she would give the band some good press than I was about hunting you down to talk about us.”

She bit her bottom lip and looked down at the notebook she was clutching in her lap. “It’s okay, Dane. I—”

“No, it’s not okay.” He ran a hand through his hair as though trying to find the right words to give her. “You have no idea how important you are to me, Lily. You’re the best friend I’ve ever had. You’re beautiful and funny and I know I can tell you anything. But I haven’t told you the truth about how I feel about you. I want more than just your friendship. I want a shot at a real relationship with you.”

Her heart ached more with every word he spoke. “Oh, Dane.”

His expression fell. “What? What’s wrong?”

Taking a deep breath, she said, “Johnathan asked me to marry him.”

The words seemed to knock the wind right out of him. She actually saw him flinch as though suffering from a blow. He shook his head and cleared his throat a couple of times before he spoke again.

“What did you tell him?” he managed to ask.

“Well…I told him yes.”

Excerpt

She stared back at me with big chocolate eyes.

Molten.

Her gaze washed over me like lava.

Burning up everything in its path.

“You are so beautiful,” she said, voice hoarse.

“Peaches,” I whispered as a warning. Wasn’t sure I trusted myself with her right then.

“You are. Did you know…did you know the first time I saw you…when you were lying covered in blood and you opened your eyes and looked at me, that I saw it? Something so beautiful and raw and powerful. Even when you’d been broken. The way you looked at me shook me straight to my bones. And then tonight…what you did for me…I don’t…”

I roughed a hand through my thrashing hair, a perfect mirror to my thrashing heart. “Peaches.”

Another warning.

I didn’t deserve the way she was looking at me. Like I was good and right when I was no better than the bastard we’d left lying back there on the floor.

So slowly, she reached out, shaking fingers gentle as she traced them along the scar that marked that night beneath my eye.

A tremble took me whole.

Energy pulsed and shivered and shook.

Shit.

I gripped her by the wrist and pressed the underside to my nose. “You’re killing me, darlin’.”

“And you’re saving me.”

A hard frown hit me. “It was you who did all the saving.”

Sitting back a fraction, she shook her head. “If it weren’t for you, I’d be home tonight, hiding in the dark.” Her tongue darted out to sweep across her lips. “I never would have been brave enough to go there or to stand up to him. To say those things.”

“But that’s where I think you’re wrong, darlin’.” This time it was my turn to reach out and touch her. I cupped the side of her face, glancing between her and the road. “I think you’re so much braver than you’ve been giving yourself credit for. I see it there. Feel it every time I look at you. You’re incredible, Willow. Every time you walk through my door, I know it. So good that I know I shouldn’t be doing whatever the fuck it is I think I’m doin’ with you.”

She was still panting those breathy pants, and she leaned into my touch.

“I…” she attempted before she looked down, averted her gaze. Even with her head downturned, there was no missing the blush creeping to her cheeks. She hesitated before she spoke. “When you kiss me…it doesn’t feel like pretending. It feels like the best thing I’ve ever felt.”

I swallowed hard, crossing a line. Pushing into the boundaries that should have been firmly set in place. “That’s because when I kiss you? It’s not pretend. When I tell you you’re gorgeous—the best thing I’ve ever seen? I mean it. And when I look at you…”

I touched the center of my chest, feeling ripped open wide. Exposed. Maybe telling her the truth when it wouldn’t do either of us any good was wrong. But there was no hiding when this girl was looking at me that way. “I feel it right here. We might be pretending, but you can’t fake this.”

Like she didn’t trust herself, she pressed farther against the door. “You make me want things…things I know I shouldn’t want.”

“And what is it you want, Peaches?” I prodded low, knowing full well I was pointing us in the direction of no return. “Told you when I came into your store that I’d give you anything.”

“I want…” She tucked her bottom lip between her teeth, nervous or unsure whether to give me the truth.

Blood pounded mercilessly through my veins. Thickened with lust. All of it clouded my judgment, knocking loose my center of gravity.

Because I knew the look on her face. Desire was written across her like a musical score.

The way her body rocked and trembled and silently pled.

Desperate to be played.

I knew I should close my mouth. Shut this down. Drop her at home. Instead, I let the words slide free. “Tell me, Peaches.”

The needy rasp fell from between her lips. “I want you to touch me.”

My fingertips tapped along the tattoo she had etched below her collarbone, always before hidden by her clothes.

It was a dandelion. An exact replica of the logo hanging on the sign over her store.

She trembled, her voice abraded with something brutally sad. “My mama…she loved them. She believed they guided the paths of our dreams. We just had to have the courage to chase them.”

She gazed up at me. “Maybe they’re just out there waiting for us to find them.”

I touched her trusting face. “Yours are, darlin’. They’re out there, waiting for you to catch up to them. Think you’re closer. You just have to step up and let it go.”

Dahlia and Keegan, Book 1 of 3

Dahlia and Keegan Book 2 coming March 2017

Excerpt

“I totally think if you like a girl, you should tell her.”

He lifts a brow. “Even if she’s never given any indication that she likes me back?”

For a second I can’t help wondering who this girl with the super-human self-control is. More than once, it’s been all I could do not to drool when Keegan walked in the room – in a purely platonic fashion of course. It’s not my fault the boy looks really, really good in a flannel hipster shirt.

                 “Are you sure about that?”

“You sound like you don’t believe me.”

“It’s not that I don’t believe you. It’s just…girls can be tricky, hard to read sometimes. And I mean, seriously, look at you.” I wave a hand up and down in a gesture that encompasses him from head to toe. “You have to know that you’re kind of a catch.”

“Kind of?” he repeats with a laugh. “Wow, you really know how to make a guy feel good about himself.”

“I wasn’t trying to make you feel good. I was just being honest.”

“Honest, huh?” He steps a little closer, and suddenly I feel a little zing of electricity at his proximity. I mean, of course I do – the guy is one long, lean package of gorgeous. All laser-green eyes and sharp jaw and cheekbones you can hang the moon on. Plus he’s smart. And nice. Any girl with a pulse would feel a zing this situation.

Still, I tamp it down quickly. A quick sizzle of attraction to Keegan is normal. Letting myself think it matters is something else entirely. And acting on it…acting on it is absolutely out of the question. First off, because he likes some other girl enough to get all freaked out about so much as talking to her, and secondly because there’s no way I’m getting that close to anyone at NextGen. It just wouldn’t be fair when I’m lying to everyone about who I am. Not to mention the fact that Cherry’s life is a total and complete mess right now. The last thing some unsuspecting guy needs is to be a part of that.

“Cut the crap, Keegan,” I tell him when I have control over my hormones again. “You know you’re hot. Plus, rumor has it you’ve got a pretty good brain to back up your looks. So what’s the problem? The girl would be nuts not to go for you.” But then something occurs to me. “She doesn’t have a boyfriend, does she?”

                 “I don’t think so, no.”

                 “That didn’t sound very confident.”

“Yeah, well, isn’t that what started this whole conversation?” he says with a smirk. “The fact that you don’t think I’m confident enough?”

I roll my eyes. “Nice deflection.”

ARC Review: Seven Black Diamonds-Melissa Marr

SevenBlackDiamonds cGoodreads/Amazon/B&N

syn

This riveting fantasy marks Melissa Marr’s return to the world of faery courts that made her Wicked Lovely series an international phenomenon.

Lilywhite Abernathy is a criminal—she’s half human, half fae, and since the time before she was born, a war has been raging between humans and faeries. The Queen of Blood and Rage, ruler of the fae courts, wants to avenge the tragic death of her heir due to the actions of reckless humans.

Lily’s father has always shielded her, but when she’s sent to the prestigious St. Columba’s school, she’s delivered straight into the arms of a fae sleeper cell—the Black Diamonds. The Diamonds are planted in the human world as the sons and daughters of the most influential families and tasked with destroying it from within. Against her will, Lilywhite’s been chosen to join them…and even the romantic attention of the fae rock singer Creed Morrison isn’t enough to keep Lily from wanting to run back to the familiar world she knows.

Melissa Marr returns to faery in a dramatic story of the precarious space between two worlds and the people who must thrive there. The combination of ethereal fae powers, tumultuous romance, and a bloodthirsty faery queen will have longtime fans and new readers at the edge of their seats.

review3.5/5 Stars

***I received this eARC as a gift in exchange for an honest review via Edelweiss and HarperCollins

When I was approved for this book, I literally jumped up and down in total excitement. Melissa Marr has influenced my own writing in so many ways. Particularly, that dark, gritty side of humanity that can be found even in the most epically paranormal creatures. Wicked Lovely was a huge part of my teen years and I was eager to get back into the twisted fae underworld set right alongside humans. Seven Black Diamonds has elements of everything I love about Melissa Marr’s character building. Deeply layered, flawed, real, and makes you delve into the gray space between good and evil. There’s a lot going on: eco-terrorism, mobsters, murder, rock stars, mystery, and sleeper cells, among politics, romance, and a quest for revenge. Somewhere in the madness, that bewitching quality was lost.

PROS:

  • Lilywhite (Lily) is fierce, independent, outspoken, a definite mobster’s daughter. She knows her value and will fight for her freedom. She understands that sometimes, bloodshed is necessary. Lily is confused over her identity. She’s sure she’s fae blood but can never be herself. If she were exposed as fae in the human world, she’d be arrested and killed. So Lily bottles it up and lives for the quiet moments when she can commune with nature and be free.
  • Each of the Seven Diamonds are memorable and likable. Roan and Will have the least involvement; I would have liked to see more of their personalities and romance. Violet is a feisty, hotheaded woman with an appetite for violence. Her temper flares hot and cold, flipping like a switch that will keep you guessing. Alkamy is abrasive, rude, mean when she wants to be, and a sweetheart beneath the sarcastic exterior. She’s full of love and admiration when you get to know her.
  • Diversity in abundance. Characters of different walks of life, various races and sexual preferences.
  • The Queen of Blood and Rage is wickedly bloodthirsty and violent. She’s calculating, blunt, and steps ahead of everyone else. A mastermind at political intrigue. I loved her. The fear that she instills in everyone she meets is all consuming.
  • I adored Lily’s mobster side. Her joy at pretty weaponry and being able to use them with skill. Her Abernathy commandments. The way she is with her father. The intricate workings of the crime world.
  • The world building is glorious. Dark, wicked, gritty. The eco-terrorism, the revenge, the killing of the innocents. The war waging between humans and fae is one of secrecy, “accidents”, and environmental mishaps. The Seelie and Unseelie have united and now, the Hidden Court has another mission, one of bitter revenge against humanity that is a threat to the nature fae thrive in.
  • Eilidh and Torquil <3. I’d love a story about them.

CONS:

  • Seven Black Diamonds is told from several POVs. At first, it’s tricky to follow. There’s a bunch of information packed into small sections-information that is crucial to the story arc and character building. It’s hard to keep track but eventually, a familiar rhythm and pattern is established.
  • Some sections felt random and lacked follow through. The sleeper cells (the 7 Black Diamonds) were destined for a mission that isn’t mentioned. The whole time, they’re waiting for Lilywhite’s arrival and when it happens, it becomes this convoluted melee of romance and marriage and politics. The Seelie princes and their involvement was way out of left field. They’re barely present and suddenly they’re crucial?
  • Zephyr was my least liked character. He mindlessly follows the cause of The Queen of Blood and Rage. He’s so devoted that he doesn’t question when he should and believes everything she says. He sacrifices everything, his heart, and his freedom for this random woman because she “created” him. I couldn’t get behind that. He’s awkward and pushy, the attraction that should have been there wasn’t.
  • Lily’s mobster “betrothed” and so-called best friend Erik falls out of the picture fast. More development there might have helped solidify the tearing between worlds for Lily.
  • Creed. Musician. Sexy. Flirty. Intensely besotted by Lily. What’s not to like? You’d think? Apart from the very obvious chemistry boiling between the two and a few steamy kisses, there’s not much there.

You’re Still the One is a sweet and steamy romance featuring one Nashville country hottie and the boss’ daughter. What happens when your celebrity crush becomes a reality? Off the walls chemistry.

PROS:

  • Charlie is a sweetheart with a bad boy rep. He loves women, knows he’s sexy, and has charm galore. He gets what he wants and due to seriously horrible bad luck, has a tarnished rep that he can’t seem to come back from. So he goes with it. Underneath the player visage and past the leggy blondes, Charlie has a heart of gold. He’s loyal, compassionate, and an advocate for using music to combat depression and bullying. The way he is with his niece is SWOON for centuries amazing. When he speaks…holy hotness. When he says, “baby girl” SLAYED. Seriously.
  • Rachel Harris is incredibly skilled at balancing that playful flirting of new romance with sweltering attraction. Charlie and Arabella, that scene in the pool. Get ready to fan yourselves ladies. ALL THAT KISSING.
  • Arabella feels trapped. She wants to make it on her own in the world but is constantly thwarted because of her famous father. Guys only want to date her to drop off demos for her dad or are too scared to risk his wrath. Anyone in the business would hire her one principle. It’s hard for a girl with a music degree and her daddy’s last name to get hired based on her own merits but she tries. Arabella desperately wants freedom and love. She’s terrible at flirting, to the point where it’s laughable, and discounts her attractiveness because of her gorgeous best friend. Her insecurities are relatable and her clumsy attempts at flirting are spot on for anyone who has ever stumbled to speak in front of their crush.
  • Life and Lyrics is a beautiful idea.

CONS:

  • You don’t really get an idea of what the band is actually like. There’s hardly any music making and that time in Nashville is so short that the sort of country star aspect of it fades into the background. This is the between time and that was occasionally a little slow. The pacing felt off.
  • The plot was fairly predictable but engaging. The bucket list-style goals for the summer were laugh-out-loud wonderful and added spice to the plot.

Chapter 2: LILY

“You need to stop hiding and go downstairs.” Shayla stood in the doorway to Lily’s bedroom. Her long greying hair fell neatly over her shoulders instead of being bound into some kind of twist or held captive under one of her innumerable scarves. An elegant dress, no doubt by a runway designer, made her look like the lady of the house rather than Lily’s caretaker, assistant, governess, whatever-her-title-was-now.

“I know. I just don’t want to. Daidí knows I don’t like parties.”

Shayla’s entire attitude switched from sweet to stern. “You’re being honored. Act like it.”

Lily couldn’t meet Shayla’s eyes.

“You will put a smile on that pretty little face of yours and march yourself down there,” Shayla continued. “You’ll go thank your father for the party, and you’ll smile at the guests, and make a point to say hello to that Morris boy that’s going to sing.”

Despite herself, Lily smiled. Creed Morrison was in every tabloid, toured worldwide, and was even in a movie. As if being a rock star wasn’t enough, he had to add acting. He had been her fantasy since she’d seen her first photo of him—and now he was here in her home.

“Morrison,” she said. “His name is Creed Morrison, Shayla.”

Shayla waved her hand dismissively. “Whatever. Creed. Morris. Unless he is in one of those musicals your father gets me tickets to see, I don’t care.” She came over to stand in front of Lily and fussed with her hair, pulling at the curls, unpinning and re-pinning it in several places as she spoke. “What matters, Lilywhite, is that Nicolas brought the boy here to sing for you. So go be charming.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Lily leaned in and kissed Shayla’s cheek before heading toward the door. Once she was sure she was out of reach, she teased, “Maybe you ought to come down too and check on Daidí. Make sure he’s not under siege from one of the fripperies.”

“Your father can handle himself just fine with those girls,” Shayla said.

“Come on. For me?”

“Hmph.” Shayla didn’t bother arguing further. She went on in front of Lily, effectively buying her a few minutes of peace.

Shayla was the closest thing to a mother that Lily had. Shayla and Daidí both swore that there was nothing romantic between them, but Lily kept hoping. Her mother had been gone for twelve years, and Shayla had filled her vacant place. They certainly functioned like a family. Shayla raised Lily when Daidí was off on business trips, and she looked after both of them when he was home.

Slowly, Lily walked through the hall, hating that she had to wear shoes, even though the tiny sandals were nothing more than a few strips of leather. She’d learned to tolerate shoes, but heels still made her feel wrong. Feet were meant to touch the earth, the floor, the sea. They weren’t to be locked away in prisons of leather or fabric. Sandals were the closest to normal that Lily had found, and tonight—surrounded by people—she needed the comfort of nearly bare feet.

At the top of the great staircase, just out of sight, Lily paused to smooth down the skirt of the dress she’d been given to wear. It wasn’t as fancy as Shayla would like, but the pale green dress made especially for her was as flattering as any dress could be. An asymmetrical neckline and fitted bodice topped a skirt made up of layers of some sort of delicate material. Tiny stones sewn into the layers caught the light and shimmered as she moved. Lily didn’t have the heart to ask if they were real gems or not. It was easier to avoid an argument if she didn’t know. She’d already lost the fights about her bracelets. Obscenely expensive diamonds and emeralds dangled from her wrists and ears.

The short blade that Lily had sheathed in a hand-sewn leather holster under her ephemeral dress was real too, though. Its weight made her feel secure despite the glittering facade. Lilywhite’s blade was a double-edged dagger that had been handcrafted for her. She wasn’t eager to use it, preferring the tidiness of her longer blades, but she could never be truly unarmed.

For all of her father’s protections, he’d also taught her that she was ultimately responsible for her own safety. The party was at her home, and the guests had all entered through a metal detector and been patted down, but she was the daughter of the head of one of the most successful criminal organizations in the world. That meant that, even here, she was armed.

Lily rounded the corner and started down the stairs. Her father looked up at her, and the pride in his face made her feel guilty for delaying. He smiled at her, and she knew that she’d been wrong to stall. Mingling at the over-the-top birthday party that Daidí insisted on this year was a little bit beyond terrifying, but he wanted to celebrate her birthday, so celebrate they would. These events layered civility and elegance onto their often violent world, and Lily knew well that the layer of softness was important—not just for how others saw the underworld but for how the demimonde saw itself.

As she walked down the stairs, she could hear soft music in the ballroom. Soon, Creed Morrison would sing, but right now, a chamber orchestra played classical music that wove around the spaces between conversations. Servers circulated with finger foods and drinks.   Usually, Lily stayed at her father’s side when she had to attend these sorts of things. Tonight, though, Daidí insisted that she talk to people her own age—other than just her friend Erik.
