cooltext1889161239 copyElena Rosales has busted her ass to get into a good college. She’s the only one in her family ever to attend, and expectations are high. No pressure. But Elena’s got this one in the bag, because she’s as dependable as the molecules she studies, as reliable as the chemical reactions that comfort her in their predictability. Until they don’t.

Elena has always wondered why her mother abandoned her on her first birthday. It’s not until she turns eighteen and her chemistry experiments go berserk that she learns the truth: Her mother wasn’t human, and the Fae are willing to harm those Elena loves if she doesn’t use her power over the elements to cure them of a deadly disease.

Derek, Elena’s brooding neighbor, isn’t the friendliest guy, but he has access to an off-hours lab and is willing to help Elena create the antivirus. He has his own secrets to keep, and this business Elena is mixed up in could blow his cover. But when Elena and Derek get together, more than chemicals spark fire-and they soon discover just how complicated attraction can get when they find themselves on the other side of the portal, fighting for survival. Lives collide, and allegiance and love are tested, in Fates Divided.

READ THIS BOOK IF:

  • You’re into unconventional fae, angel, human, and half-breed relations.
  • You’re looking for steamy chemistry.

PROS:

  • A twist on the tree of knowledge, Nephilim, fae, and their relationship to God. The complex relationship between races was intricate and intriguing, it drew me in and totally captivated me.
  • The mix of science, elemental magic, and immunology added a nice blend to the paranormal elements.
  • The subtle racism was an important part of the story. Not only is Elena a minority, being a half-Hispanic woman but as a half-fae, she experiences the same bigotry in both worlds.
  • Each character has a substantial, developed personality, no matter how fleeting to the story arch.
  • Elena and Derek are HOT together. The energy is charged and electric between them. The attraction is more than skin-deep. They’re both intelligent, determined, and have the same turmoil going on between their parents, their abilities, and the duress they’re under.

CONS:

  • A little instalove. Things go from instant attraction to much more in less than a week.
  • The politics of the fae world, their hatred of the Nephilim, the superiority complex, the treatment of Halvings, how they see humans and what the Ternin world is like in relation to the various kingdoms were briefly mentioned. A clearer distinction and explanation of these relationships would have made it easier to understand when to trust, what to be weary of, and what Elena and Derek were getting into. Also, a deeper understanding of why the enemy would resort to such harsh measures. Additionally, the codex text was so brief that it’s hard to put any importance on it for being so crucial to their survival. A couple of words?
  • Some parts were a bit slow. There was a lot of rest for how dire the situation was and though necessary, it didn’t seem like enough.

ARC Review: The Foxglove Killings-Tara Kelly

Release Date: September 1, 2015

cooltext1889161239 copyGramps always said that when the crickets were quiet, something bad was coming. And the crickets have been as silent as the dead. It started with the murdered deer in the playground with the unmistakable purple of a foxglove in its mouth. But in the dying boondock town of Emerald Cove, life goes on.

I work at Gramps’s diner, and the cakes―the entitled rich kids who vacation here―make our lives hell. My best friend, Alex Pace, is the one person who gets me. Only Alex has changed. He’s almost like a stranger now. I can’t figure it out…or why I’m having distinctly more-than-friend feelings for him. Ones I shouldn’t be having.

Then one of the cakes disappears.

When she turns up murdered, a foxglove in her mouth, a rumor goes around that Alex was the last person seen with her—and everyone but me believes it. Well, everyone except my worst enemy, Jenika Shaw. When Alex goes missing, it’s up to us to prove his innocence and uncover the true killer. But the truth will shatter everything I’ve ever known about myself — and Alex.

READ THIS IF:

  • You are into creepy murder mysteries
  • You love unexpected twists

PROS:

  • The diary entries are sickening and terrifying. They come from a disturbed, desperate mind full of anger and resentment. They’re the kind of dark that makes you want to keep the light on.
  • Mystery propels the plot forwards as the clues mount and the crimes get even more macabre.
  • Bullying plays a central role in this story. The war between the cakes and the residents who don’t have money makes for disaster. They’re unhinged, crazed, violent, you never know what’s coming and everyone is out for blood. No one can be trusted. Some scenes are twisted and ominous. They’re made of sick human on human carnage. They thirst for humilation and retaliation. It’s even more distrubing than the murders themselves. How people can be so cruel and sadistic is truly horrifying.
  • Relationships were real and complex. No fiery chemistry or epiphany where all the answers magically appear. It’s messy and painful and yeah, full of mistakes but whether it be between friends, family, etc., each interaction has an authentic ring to it.
  • A twist that will leave you reeling. You’ll want to go back and read, to look for signs.

CONS:

  • Why the foxgloves?
  • There were some intriguing stories that almost sound like campfire tales strewn within. They’re dark, chilling, and will make you feel a little paranoid. These colorful stories, had they been more focal, would have added another layer of uncertainty, fear, and foreboding to the story.
  • How do you not immediately report something as disturbing as someone breaking into your room when you were sleeping? How do you not report being assaulted when there are witnesses? There’s so much crime and violence going unchecked that it grated on me. While it was chaotic and frightening, it made everything seem perilous and sinister, I couldn’t understand Nova’s constant need to push things aside.

 READ THIS BOOK IF:

  • You’re hungering for diversity. Lair of Dreams lights on class issues, politics, disability, abuse (trafficking), racial issues, eugenics, and LGBT relationships.
  • You love historical fiction or history in general. There are so many important issues raised that you quickly become engrossed in the colloquialisms, manners, expectations. Everything is made of speakeasy lingo and the old time euphoria of the early 1900s.
  • You’re looking for something creepy crawly and horrific. The mixture of multicultural folklore, ghosts, and governmental coverups will make your skin crawl.
  • You adore Libba Bray. Each book is a new, wonderful surprise with multidimensional and unique characters set in intriguing places rife with crime and mystery.

PROS:

  • Diversity galore. Early 1900s beliefs and politics couple with each character. They all have something to overcome and work through. Historical truths like the Chinese Exclusion Act, the rise of the KKK, and raids on underground LGBT clubs all find their place in this unique story. Not only do we get to see conflicts that are relevant and the United States struggles with to this day but you get the different perspectives. From the extremely religious, from the Chinese restaurant owner, from a young gay lover who wants to find his place, and a woman who is hiding from an abusive past. There’s a little bit of everything and you’ll feel for every single character.
  • Mysteries that started to develop in book one are even more prominent. The clues are everywhere. Everything is connected. The layering is astounding.
  • The ghosts are out of this world horrifying and totally ghastly, a cross between malicious poltergeist and zombie, between their hunger, the chilling sounds, the music box song, and the general way they skitter and widen their jaws to eat people alive, have fun trying to sleep with the lights off!
  • Evie is far from the focal point. Each character has his or her part. I loved the mix of culture and drama. Romance is on the horizon for each character. It’s messy, complicated, and just when you think you’ve got it figured out, another twist is thrown in.
  • The dreamwalker world is intensely detailed and vibrant. You can picture everything and here, the emotions are larger. Desire meets desperation and happiness goes from total ecstasy to utter devastation. It’s a rocky, bittersweet, and often scary place.
  • Ling and Henry quickly became my favorite characters. Their situations are fueled by haunting encounters, desire, and a strong thirst for freedom from the oppressive gaze of society. Ling is unexpected. A young girl with a disability that she won’t let rule her, she pushes past the bullies and the bigots, she uses her brain and things of science, working on becoming a future famous inventor. Henry’s past is intoxicating. His life on the bayou, his romance, the strict upbringing all took me by surprise.
  • Sam. You can never really know a person. Just when you thought that Sam was an insufferable flirt with fast hands and a tendency to rob people blind, always looking for the next con, the past comes out like a slap to the face. Suddenly Sam has all this hidden depth that you don’t quite know what to do with. His hurt, confusion, and determination all center on his missing mother. He’s got feelings, true, brutal emotions that lurk just under the surface of his carefree attitude.

CONS:

  • There are even more character POV swaps than the last book. Though all engrossing stories with their own contributions to the plot, it can be a little overwhelming, especially in a book 600-odd pages. The constantly flip-flopping back and forth actually left way more questions than answers.
  • It took ages for the clues to build up to the point of uncovering the truth. For a novel that is set during a time span of less than a month, it felt much longer.

As Bailey starts her new life, everything she’s known to be true, is not. Time is of the essence and choices have to be made or consequences suffered. Not only does Bailey fear Kade, but another danger lurks deep in the recesses of the forest.
Unbeknownst to her, that danger is what she’s been searching for all along. At the turn of the moon, her fate hangs in the balance . . . and it’s up to her to make the
right choice.

There was a time when I lived for the pack, when I would do anything to save my people. The white wolves were slowly reducing in number, and now everyone was desperate, struggling to make ends meet before we were wiped into extinction. I was twenty-four years old, and a daughter of the Northern pack alpha. It was my duty to continue my lineage. The only problem was, there were no other unmated alphas around other than my best friend, Sebastian, and the supreme douche, Kade Whitemore.

There was no way in hell I was going to alliance myself with that rat bastard. He was alpha of the Yukon pack, violent, and an overbearing ass who’d rather see me on my back with my legs spread open than being his equal. I’d rather die than be forced to be his mate for all eternity. Why couldn’t I mate with Sebastian? Thinking of fucking him gave me the willies, but anything was better than Kade.

Anger racked my body and I sat there, seething . . . until I felt him. He was coming for me; I could sense him drawing near. The closer we got to the meadow, the more I could smell Kade and his excitement—his lust. Hopefully, he could smell the rage and disgust coming from me.

***I received this eARC as a gift in exchange for an honest review via the author

I’ve been a big fan of Sarah Noffke’s books since I devoured the Lucidites series. When I picked this book up, I was crazy excited to go back into the dream travel world and OMG was I shocked. I instantly fell in love with these new characters and can honestly say, I ADORE this series even more than the Lucidites.

READ THIS BOOK IF:

  • You’re looking for a new spin on dream travel, cult-like communities, and medical experiments.
  • You like strong, developed characters, wicked villians, and wonderful dialogue.
  • You want to LAUGH and be completely engrossed in the story.

PROS:

  • Em is an unconventional, inspiring lead. She knows exactly who she is, what she wants, and isn’t afraid to do what others turn their nose up at. Em is thoughtful, passionate, she doesn’t let her defect status break her and hangs out with the humans, neck deep in dirt and farm life. A regular sleuth, Em is a little rebel mixed with a klutz. There are tons of hilarious moments. Em is all personality.
  • REN. If you’ve read the Lucidites series, you’ll remember his character, if you’re anything like me, fondly. Sarcastic, dominant, a little viscious, he’s unforgetable. Get him in a room with his sister, Em’s mother and it’s just about the best thing I’ve read in a while. The taunting, sibling rivalry and harassment is laugh out loud funny.
  • Rogue is my new book boyfriend. Not only is he delciously sexy but he has a quirky, rebellious personality that just oozes sex appeal. The attraction between Em and Rogue is easy, natural, and they fit so well. Every moment is a new discovery and rediscovery of their childhood friendship. Seriously, swoons. Rogue has some of the best lines. He’s blunt, flirty, adorable and more than anything else, devoted to his cause. The scenes where he’s suffering ripped my heart out.
  • Every secondary character is memorable and has a clearly defined storyline.
  • PLOT TWIST CENTRAL. The clues are there but it still took me by surprise. The sheer evil, sadistc lack of morality and concern for humankind is despicable.
  • Austin Valley has that creepy cult vibe. It’s inclusive, full of brainwashing and elitism based on religious zealots. Humans are basically menial slaves that don’t know any better. The outside world is the enemy. It’s insane and terrifying when you really think about it.
  • The supernatural abilities are even more elaborate and awesome than before.

CONS:

  • When the truth is revealed, it’s a punch to the stomach without much examination of the wound. The findings are presented like facts and not expanded upon like they could have been to get the true horror of what is going on. The realization is powerful and leaves an impact but it would have been even stronger had it been thoroughly and psychologically explored by the characters.
