Dead of Winter reads like 2 different books. One, about the events that happened in book 1, When Fall Breaks, and another about Caden and a newfound love interest. The cohesion is loose and haphazard, it’s like pieces were thrown together and the original plotline got lost in the secondary romance. The entire read is spent wondering about the horrible disaster the book begins with and whether or not the perp is alive and you have to wade through so much random romance that you lose faith that you’ll ever get answers.
Kaitlyn is dealing with her trauma of abuse, stalking, etc., from book 1 but we barely see any of that. What we do get is Caden’s PTSD. The brief moments of terror and paranoia to get behind the wheel after the crash are spot on. The anxiety, fear, and constant second-guessing truly show how PTSD can affect you down to the smallest, seemingly inconsequential everyday choices. It sneaks in and consumes, a plague that you can’t escape from.
Issues between Caden and Peyton that were life or death important took over the plot and then abruptly were replaced by a mystery girl. Nothing was resolved, things were barely talked through, and it left a big hole in how to process the whole romance, whether it was real at all.
From the first encounter, I saw it coming. The surprise factor was lost early on and the story was a little predictable.
Some sections were cute and engaging, like the holiday scavenger hunt. Others were a bit dull.
The sexual banter and love/hate playfullness between Caden and Avery (Tangles) was hilarious and totally will have you falling in love with the idea of them as a couple. They tease and mock each other in a way that’s childish and endearing. ❤ Avery is a sassy little Southern charmer.
I wanted to give you everything. You were the first girl that I ever wanted to call back. The first girl I was proud to let wear my jersey. The first girl I ever stopped myself from crossing the line with. You were too good for that. Too good for me… I loved you with everything in me.

She later went on to Simpson University where she obtained her multiple subject teaching credential. Julie enjoys life in the “State of Jefferson” where she lives with her husband and two children. As a family, they spend their time tromping around the Marble Mountains and Russian Wilder-ness. They also take pleasure in rafting, skiing, snowmobiling, off-roading, campfires, and living it up in the great outdoors. When she’s not with her family, Julie spends her days teaching next door to her co-author, fellow prankster, and partner in crime, Tracy. The most recent of their crazy adventures was to take on the challenge of writing this silly, little novel about life in their neck of the woods. They hope you have fun reading this story which was inspired by their small town, rural upbringing, and the personalities of their four children.
