Release Day Blitz: Burnt Devotion-Rebecca Ethington

cooltext1889161239 copyBurnt Devotion, Book 5 in the Imdalind Series. Dawn of Ash – the previously announced book five has now been moved to book 6. Yes! An extra book. If you have been waiting for the next installment of The Imdalind Series this is the book you have been waiting for!
It was supposed to be the final battle, the one to end Edmund’s line, his life, and free the magic Edmund had taken from the world. That was how it was foreseen. The end of the battle that has raged for centuries, unbeknownst to the mortals around them, the battle that would end with Joclyn’s death.

But it did neither.

The battle still reigns, Joclyn still lives, and the sight that was given eight hundred years ago is broken.

And it’s not the only one.

Sights that were once thought infallible have become nothing more than scattered glass, with broken pieces shattering into incorrect visages. Sain clings to the magic that he knows to be true, but there is something else, something that he is not saying. And what he does say is no longer adding up.

Something is wrong.

Ilyan and his people move through the caves, following a sight they hope to be correct, fleeing a battle that should have been the end while the battle within each of them grows with each step.

Ryland fights the monsters his father has infected him with.

Wynifred fights the confusion of who she is.

Dramin fights to live.

Prague may not survive this battle, it may be ripped to shreds… or burned to ashes.

They found me when I was five; a little girl sitting on a bench in Grand Central Station, soaking wet, asking about the rain.

I remembered nothing about how I got there, or who my parents were. I couldn’t even remember my name. I was tagged, labeled and doomed to cycle through state care for the next twelve years; moving from one family to another. They all rejected me as the dreams began to come, the memories began to return, and things around me began to explode.

Now my mind is full of a world of shadows, things that my heart pleads with me to be true, that I hope are only fantasy. That the disturbing past I see is not mine.

When I sleep I hear whispers of magic, and of evil queens, and a world that exists alongside our own. Things that could never be. But, there is one thing I know to be true. That there was a boy who was torn from me. A boy that I know means more to me than a brother, or than a lover. But what he is to me, I am not sure. I hear him cry for me in my dreams, I hear people call him The Catalyst.

I know I need to find him.

I wouldn’t have tried, if I would have known that finding River, would have made all my dreams turn into a haunting reality.

Novellas Weekend Part One: Through Glass Episodes Four & Five

21534165

stock-footage-red-hot-lava-falling-over-barren-landscape-into-ocean-sunset-causing-rising-steam-hawaii-shot-on

It’s been several months since I read Through Glass for the first time, back before it was a serial novella, when it was just one brilliant book. Through Glass was my first Rebecca Ethington book and since then I’ve been hooked. If you’re looking for my review on Episodes 1-3 they’re compacted in this single review because I did not read them as novellas –> Through Glass

If you haven’t read episodes 1-3, this does contain some SPOILERS.

4 STARS

Plot:

Lex and Travis have just escaped Abran and the compound that houses Azul and what may well be monsters that haunt the dark world they are now thrust into. They must get to Blood Rose before Abran does something that will change the world forever. If only nothing stood in their way.

-via Goodreads

PROS:

  • When I finished reading this, I thought that not much happened. At first, because these are so short it’s easy to plow right through and be itching for more and think that so little happened but when you really sit down and think about it, it’s remarkable how much has happened in so little time.
  • Some really significant things happen in episode four but the most compelling in not only the discovery of a change in the Ulama but Travis and Lex finally have it out, they express their emotions, their hurt, and a real reunion and remembrance takes place. Lex and Travis’ relationship is slowly but surely rebuilt from the ashes and their interactions become easy and teasing. It’s uplifting and real.
  • The bleak descriptions, Lex’s internal dialogue, her insecurities and her yearning for Cohen and her horror at what he might have become are a heartbreaking glimpse into her character. Lex is coming to terms with what may be happening to her body as a result of the Ulama and it is traumatic but she’s so brave.
  • Travis. You finally get a good look at the feels behind Travis’ tough visage. Inside, Travis was forced to grow up fast and is filled with so much love, despite his stubbornness.

4 STARS

Plot:

Lex and Travis have walked into a house, a house that became a maze, a maze that has now become a prison. They stand in the dark behind the door that is now their only security from the Tar outside. The Tar that are keeping them from their destination, from reaching Cohen and from stopping Abran from the dark deeds he has planned.

-via Goodreads

PROS:

  • The ending. You will never see it coming and it changes EVERYTHING. Just when you thought this story couldn’t get darker, you’ll be swept away into a world of sinister and deadly possibilities.
  • Intensity. Heart-stopping, chilling, seat gripping insanity. The sheer amount of danger, the panicked rush of fear for their lives it’s all so incredibly well done. You know that moment, in a horror film when you’re consumed by a weird combination of dread and hope, as the killer stalks towards the place when the main character is hiding, shaking in terror. THAT. Exactly that and it’s fantastic. If you’re looking for something thrilling and quick, this is it.
  • The children in the house. The sense of apprehension and distrust, the suspicion, and shock at seeing survivors is written so well. The whole situation is so sad.
  • The descriptions are creepy, fueled by death and darkness. There are several profound statements about this new reality that pose questions about the nature of humanity, about how we see people, and how easy it is to dismiss people after we’ve labeled them.
  • Lex is a fighter, she refuses to give up and struggles to maintain her sense of morals and humanity in such a mess up, death-filled world.

CONS:

  • I never know how to rate novellas, they’re just so short and these seem shorter than usual. Other than the length, these are wonderful installments in the Through Glass series.
