New to FDNY Engine 58, proby Paul Jefferson has no idea the expectations that the firefighters before him have set. He walks into his new job with an arrogance that’s sure to land him proby duty for the rest of his days but he has the professional skills to back his attitude. Loving every minute of his time with fire, Paul struggles to find his place in the FDNY brotherhood. Outside of the station, a true playboy at heart, he has no issues making connections, but there’s only one girl that holds his heart.

Paramedic Mariana Barbosa is new to the big city. Luckily, her path crosses with Paul Jefferson shortly after accepting her new position. The two instantly connect and become the best of roommates… or something like that. Behind closed doors, the two are the perfect couple without crossing any lines because Mariana is too afraid to risk their living situation to pursue what her heart is telling her she feels.

When Mariana feels betrayed by Paul, she jumps on the opportunity to date the handsome, good guy from work. Paul isn’t a fan of Mariana’s new boyfriend and starts to slack with Engine 58. Things don’t go as expected with Mariana’s new boyfriend and after she uses Paul to cover her issues, she pushes him further away until it may be too late for either of them to admit their true feelings.

Holding the Other – Lee Maverick and Miranda Wallen are the king and queen of country music. The married couple have ruled the charts for the last ten years and fans love the chemistry between them. Before the night is over, this Valentine’s Day will be one for the records.

My Favorite What If – Sloan Talbott and Jacob “Smitty” Smith are spending their first Valentine’s Day as a couple. In the short time they’ve been together, they’ve carved out the perfect nook for just the two of them. Having spent the last six months in Italy, it’s time they head back to the States and learn to be together with their meddling families surrounding them 24/7.

Love’s not easy. Love’s not perfect. Love hurts. Love doesn’t last forever. Can these couples endure love at it’s ugliest or will it break them down more than they can endure?

Excerpt            Sloan’s fingers walk up my chest, grabbing my shirt and forcing me to look down at her. Her eyes glimmer with sensuality and I know exactly where her mind is going. Leaning down, our lips barely touch and the passion is ignited. With a shrill squeal, I scoop her into my arms as though we’re newlyweds about to cross the threshold for the first time. Sloan nibbles on my neck and I moan as I walk us toward the bedroom, ready to christen our new bed.

“You gonna give me the chance to marry you and do this for real?” I ask, already knowing the answer.
“Not a chance in hell.”
I chuckle as I set her on the bed, tugging my shirt off. “I’ll get you to change your mind some day.”
Sloan pulls her own shirt off, leaving me licking my lips at the sight of her in just a black lacy brassiere. Teasing me, she runs her index finger from her collarbone between her breasts, licking her lips and keeping direct eye contact with me. The tip of her finger slips inside her bra and I bite my lip, wanting to replace her hand with mine, but am way too turned on by her own handiwork to stop her
“Maybe one day, when we’re old and gray,” Sloan says, drawing out her words and speaking in barely a whisper.
She stands up, wiggling her hips and pushing her pants to the floor. Now she’s in just her black lace bra and thong. She turns her back to me, crawling over our king size bed and I reach out, running my hand over her perfectly tight runner’s ass. Sloan stops moving forward, placing her hand on top of mine and leaning up on her knees. Her back is against my chest, our bodies flush against each other’s and I squeeze my hand tightly around the handful in my touch.
“I don’t want easy right now, Smitty. I want you, me, and passion.”

Release Day Blitz: Until You Fall in Love-Lyssa Layne

  cooltext1889161239 copy
Single mom Jordan Glastetter doesn’t know how she’d survive without her best friend, Abram Tomko. He’s the father her son never knew and he’s the rock she’s always leaned on. When Abram’s father suffers a heart attack, it’s Abram’s turn to depend on Jordan, finally seeing her as the woman she’s become and not the little girl he grew up with. Will they risk their friendship for a chance at love?
cooltext1921345213 copyAbram’s breath is warm on my neck and he’s closed the space between us. I turn around to face him, only for us to be less than a couple inches away from each other. Looking up into his chocolatey brown eyes, my heart races. Get it together, Jordan, this is only Abram Tomko. Your best friend. Your husband’s best friend.
“I’ll handle it, thanks for letting me know.” I try to sound confident, like the fearless, single mom that I pretend to be.

Abram frowns, his hand moving to my waist and I feel his rough fingers on my bare skin between my peach tank top and low rise jeans. “Don’t, Jordan. Don’t act like you’re in this alone. I’m right beside you, just like I’ve always been.”

I open my mouth to speak, but Abram puts his finger to my lips. He’s right, he knows my mannerisms better than I do. Now that he’s brought it to my attention, this is typical me. When something is difficult, when I don’t want to impose on him, I push Abram away, but he knows I need him as much as R.J. does.

“Jor, for the past five years it’s just been me, you, and R.J. We’re a family, just like the other kids in his class. There’s nothing to hide, nothing to be afraid of.”I nod, he’s right. He’s our family and just like every obstacle since Robby died, Abram will stick by my side. His finger moves away from my mouth and I start to speak again when I realize he’s lowering his head toward mine. Not sure what else to do, I nuzzle my face against his neck and he lets out a sigh, blowing my hair. His mouth finds my forehead where he plants a kiss. Without thinking, I brush my lips across his neck, my pulse racing erratically. One of his hands squeezes my waist while the other fists a handful of my hair. An unfamiliar desire rips through my stomach and I lower my mouth, kissing further along his neck. Abram tilts my chin up, looking into my eyes and I suck in my breath.

“Mommy…”

Abram and I jump apart, partially as to not be caught, but more so because my five-year-old only calls me “Mommy” when something’s wrong. Abram takes a few steps toward R.J. and picks him up. “What’s wrong, buddy?”

My almost-kindergartner is frightened, his lips pressed into a straight line and the fear in his eyes lets us in on his secret. “Pop’s sick, real sick.”

Carrying my cup of coffee, I walk back to my bedroom and look into the suitcase. So far everything looks alright—swimsuit, shorts, t-shirts, dress slacks, and dress shirt. Jules came through on her other promise to go to the store for the trip—deodorant, soap, toothpaste, condoms. Wait, condoms?!

“Jules, what the hell is this?” I ask, holding up the box of Trojans.

Not missing a beat, she grabs the box from me and throws it back in the suitcase, zipping it up. “I got everything you could possible need. Soap, toothpaste, Pepto, Pedialyte—”

“And condoms?” I ask with a raised eyebrow.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t know you had another preferred method of safe sex,” she quips as she pulls my suitcase off the bed and drags it to my front door.

“And just who do you think I’ll be having sex with?”
She shrugs as she walks back to the bedroom and shoves a pile of clothes in my arms. “I don’t know, I don’t care, but you need to get laid. So go to paradise, find some lucky woman, and get some.”

Sleep deprived and semi-delirious after plowing straight through My Favorite What If I have the strangest urge to smile uncontrollably and look at those ridiculously adorable photos of baby animals. You know the ones. Happiness. Grinning ear to ear as I write this, I can’t remember the last time I felt that warm glow of perfect bliss after reading an amazing book. My Favorite What If gave me a serious case of the warm and fuzzies. I just can’t get enough of Sloan and Smitty.

PROS:

  • Sloan is a ray of sunshine, scratch that, she’s pretty much the whole rainbow complete with a pot of gold. Sloan’s charisma, her smile, her bubbly, flirty personality bursts off the pages and rejuvenates your senses. Her energy is off the charts. Not only is she a genuine, kind-hearted, caring individual but she’s feisty, confident and unafraid to embrace her sexuality. It’s liberating and wonderful seeing a character so free with her body without seeming overly promiscuous. A fitness guru and savvy entrepreneur, Sloan seems to have everything going for her but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Sloan’s heart is a shattered mess, plastered back together with cheap generic glue. Sloan lives vicariously through exercise and her passion but is hesitant to share her broken heart for fear of being unable to piece it back together again should things go south. Sloan is a natural lover, she has so much to give and so much happiness to bring to the world. It’s easy to feel kinship with her. Sloan has lived through a horrific tragedy. Her reasons for closing off her heart are sound and her fear is very real. The certainty that to love and lose it again will destroy you is strong.
  • Smitty is consumed by the memories of his jilted wedding. A slave to nostalgia, Smitty has a shrine to Caroline that makes it impossible for him to move on. Everything, even the smallest of things reminds him of her. While all his friends are getting their happily ever after, he’s trapped in memories. Smitty feels to move on would be betrayal and it hurts to much. He’s kind, flirtatious, he sometimes says the wrong thing and can be a little pushy but he’s all gruff, masculine heat. Smitty is adorable. He draws you in with his almost child-like uncertainty about Sloan, he’s attentive and curious. It’s so cute. He looks at Sloan with wonder, as if she’s the answer to his prayers.
  • Together, Sloan and Smitty are HOT. They’re gentle sometimes, teasing others. The chemistry escalates. It’s sexy, energetic, passionate.
  • My Favorite What If centers on the fragility of human life but more importantly, it glorifies the beautiful resilience of the human heart. We’re able to survive the greatest tragedies, overcome our pasts and find love again, brilliant and strong, born from the ashes of the wreckage. Lyssa Layne captures the overwhelming terror and anxiety of opening up, of living again, and the guilt of moving on after loved ones are cruelly ripped from our lives. Sloan and Smitty both find that it’s okay to be scared as long as that fear doesn’t prevent them from taking a chance on happiness, that sometimes, the risk is worth the possible backlash.
  • If you’ve read Everybody’s After Love, you’ll be so excited to see Jules and Bentley again. All secondary characters are lively and add to the story.
  • The tragic circumstances were a HUGE surprise. Speculation and suspicion are high as the story progresses. Get ready for shock and sadness.

CONS:

  • Both Smitty and Sloan use sex to escape feeling anything real. The sex scenes were a little excessive but it was a part of their characters.

+++Does contain triggers.

Fear of Striking Out will leave you breathless, bemused, and terrified. The exhilaration and happiness of perfect love is poisoned by a relentless past that threatens every second of ecstasy. The fear is very real and the probability of a disaster looms throughout the story but never once is it hopeless. For Mia, love is the strength that gives her what she needs to fight for her future. For Tate, Mia is the missing puzzle piece he never knew he needed to make him whole. Brace yourself for a lot of tears and even more smiles.

PROS:

  • Tate is a sweetheart. He loves hard and has a big heart. Not only is Tate seriously sexy but what makes him so addictive is what a great guy he is. He’s attentive, he’s in awe of Mia’s beauty and doesn’t fail to show her just how much he adores her. Tate has a past, it’s not pretty but he adapted and has become a greater man because of it. Tate has Mia on his mind all the time and the compassion he shows her is incredible. He’s intoxicated by her personality, her beauty, her heart.
  • My heart broke for Mia, over and over again. Her pain is crushing, consuming and slowly seeps into your soul. Her anxiety, the way she adjusts, avoids, and manipulates her words to protect herself from her ex are true insight into dealing with aftermath of abuse. Mia’s imprisoned by her past and the need to protect others from what she’s suffered. She’s willing to give up her heart, her chance at happily ever after to shield those she loves from danger. It’s powerful and agonizing. Mia is courageous but she can’t forget her past and falls prey to her memories. The depictions of abuse are hard to get through. From the small scenes that show possession, dominance through punches and bruised wrists to the more graphic, Mia’s thoughts are an amalgamation of memory and living in her happiness with Tate to escape these incidents. Mia is not always courageous, she gets scared, she becomes complacent to save herself from a worse situation but she’s never weak. Lyssa Layne did a fabulous job capturing the many parts of Mia and how they war with each other, calling out for her to fight back, to protect herself, to give up and to dream. Lyssa wrote Mia as confident, take charge, and yet hidden beneath this outer persona is a scarred past that threatens to overcome the Mia she so desperately yearns to become.
  • Together, Mia and Tate have undeniable attraction. Scenes are HOT. They’re all the more heated because of how poignant their emotions are. Each touch is made of love.
  • The scenes with Mia and Toby. Yeah, I cried…
  • Asher is a charmer but a slimy one. To an outsider, he’s a golden boy. He’s attractive, successful, charismatic but seeing the way he leers at women, the way he robs Mia of space and claims her as his property, will make you sick. Any bit of attraction disappears and is replaced by disgust. Asher is a vile, despicable human being and not far from psychotic. When he loses control it’s horrifying. Fear for Mia is a shadow that lingers on the edge of her happy moments.
  • For the most part, the abusive scenes are mild but for anyone who has been through domestic abuse or abuse in general, it might be too much. The intensity does increase as the story progresses. I appreciated that it wasn’t extremely explicit.
  • That final scene. Prepare for the ugly cry because OMG the anticipation. That was evil.
  • The epilogue. My heart. A little sappy but beautiful. Every bit of love is magnified and solidified in simple words that ring with power and truth.
  • If you’ve read The Right Pitch, Colie and Grant are back and as adorable as ever. This mini continuation of their story is the satisfaction you didn’t know you needed after their story ended.

CONS:

  • Fights were too easily resolved and didn’t build up to the level of drama needed to make them feel like a huge deal.
  • Some sections could have been expanded to show the development of Tate and Mia’s love. It was explosive, they fell fast, and it was a tad like instalove.
cooltext1889172435 copy

cooltext1921345213 copyWaves crash in the darkness of the night. The moon peeks behind a few clouds as I lean against Mia’s deck sipping whiskey. Once again, the thought of moving to L.A. doesn’t seem so bad, especially when I feel her hand slide over my back pockets. Her breath is warm on my ear as both hands run over my backside. I feel her smile against my cheek. She lightly kisses it and whispers while she gives me a squeeze, “I can’t wait to see you in baseball pants this season.”

Laughing, I turn around to face her and pull her body against mine. She moves her arms around my neck and we exchange a powerful kiss. My whole body shakes inside and I don’t ever want to stop kissing her. What is this woman doing to me? I’m not the kind of man that wants to settle down. Back in Milwaukee, I had a few lady friends that I would get together with from time to time, but I’ve never seen a woman the way I see Mia Tomko. She breaks the kiss, but I don’t let go.

“Good, you started the fire,” she says nodding toward the fire pit. “I brought out the fixings for s’mores; hope you like them.”

Chuckling, I nod my head as I let go of her and she walks over to the table. “They’re actually my favorite.”
I watch her open the box of graham crackers. Damn, even in torn-up jeans and a baggy Stanford sweatshirt she look good. Reaching for another bag to busy myself, I stop and look at Mia. “Reese’s?”

She nods with a grin. “Trust me, it’s way better than a Hershey bar. It’s pure ecstasy.”
Leaning forward, I kiss her neck, making her giggle. “Nah, I think this is pure ecstasy.”
Walking to the fire pit with roasters in hand, I stand behind her so I can nibble on her neck as we toast the ‘mallows. She tilts her head, giving me full access to her soft skin. A few turns of the roaster and she holds the s’more in front of my mouth. My teeth clamp down over the treat as I lock eyes with her. “Mmm…” I moan. She’s right, the Reese’s are delicious.

Grinning, she pulls the s’more back and takes a bite herself. Chocolate smears on her lip. I lean forward and run my tongue over it then close my mouth and suck her lip to get every last bit off. As she slips her tongue over mine, I can feel myself start to get hard and I moan into her mouth. Mumbling with my lips still against hers, I utter, “You’re right… ecstasy.”
