Release Day Blitz: Burnt Devotion-Rebecca Ethington

cooltext1889161239 copyBurnt Devotion, Book 5 in the Imdalind Series. Dawn of Ash – the previously announced book five has now been moved to book 6. Yes! An extra book. If you have been waiting for the next installment of The Imdalind Series this is the book you have been waiting for!
It was supposed to be the final battle, the one to end Edmund’s line, his life, and free the magic Edmund had taken from the world. That was how it was foreseen. The end of the battle that has raged for centuries, unbeknownst to the mortals around them, the battle that would end with Joclyn’s death.

But it did neither.

The battle still reigns, Joclyn still lives, and the sight that was given eight hundred years ago is broken.

And it’s not the only one.

Sights that were once thought infallible have become nothing more than scattered glass, with broken pieces shattering into incorrect visages. Sain clings to the magic that he knows to be true, but there is something else, something that he is not saying. And what he does say is no longer adding up.

Something is wrong.

Ilyan and his people move through the caves, following a sight they hope to be correct, fleeing a battle that should have been the end while the battle within each of them grows with each step.

Ryland fights the monsters his father has infected him with.

Wynifred fights the confusion of who she is.

Dramin fights to live.

Prague may not survive this battle, it may be ripped to shreds… or burned to ashes.

ARC Review: Soul of Flame-Rebecca Ethington

4.5/5 Stars

Soul of Flame (Imdalind, #4)-Rebecca Ethington

+++I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review and in participation with Good Choice Reading blog tours.

29e50-sofamazongrsw

I feel like I read this book eons ago. No really. I read Soul of Flame in early February and here we are mid-March. For those of you who have been following my semi-stalkerish love for this series, last month I did an Imdalind reread-a-thon and put up reviews for the earlier books in the series. If you haven’t read books 2 + 3 and want to check out my reviews, here are the links:Eyes of Ember (Imdalind, #2) Scorched Treachery (Imdalind, #3) That being said, not only is Rebecca Ethington an awesome, funny person but this series is crazy addictive and if you haven’t yet taken the journey to Imdalind, Kiss of Fire (Imdalind, #1) is FREE on Amazon: Get Kiss of Fire. I can’t say enough wonderful, gushing, obsessive things about this story. It’s packed with emotion, you will laugh, cry, ache, pine, and get so enraged you’ll feel compelled to scream out of frustration. It’s an emotional merry-go-round of feels.  The storyline is original, it takes you on a magical journey into a legacy of magic, prophecy, and death in such an epic way you’ll feel like you’re experiencing a story that transcends the pages. When I first read Kiss of Fire way back when, I was so incredibly impressed with the character development, the creativity, and the dialogue. It’s passionate, raw, and yet so easy to identify with the characters. Each book is better than the last, I didn’t think it was possible but I’ve never been more happy to be wrong. There were so many perfect quotes, if I could, I’d share the entire first chapter ❤

The petals were a blizzard that covered the world, creating beauty that minutes ago I had forgotten could exist. Despite what my walking terrors would have me believe, the world was not always blood-soaked walls and torture chambers. The world was not all anger and hatred as Edmund had hoped. The world was beautiful…”Miluju tē, Joclyn. Ty jsi moje navždy. Mūj začátek a mūj konec.” He whispered the words like a prayer, and although I understood nothing, I understood everything. I could hear his thoughts as he spoke, his heart translating for me what my mind could not understand. “You are my forever. My beginning and my end,” I whispered back to him in English.

***

I felt all his love in that instant, all his worry and sadness. I felt every promise and every vow. I felt it all in one tick of the clock before it was gone from me. His golden eyes devoured me as his fingers trailed over my jaw, lighting me on fire. He swallowed my soul with that look before he turned from me, his back straight as he towered before me with the long ribbon of gold hanging down his back and to the floor.

+++Contains spoilers if you haven’t read Scorched Treachery.

Plot: Soul of Flame picks up immediately where Scorched Treachery left off (mid-scene). Jocyln escaped her mental imprisonment with the help of Ilyan and fumbles to piece her broken life back together. She’s terrified, the psychological damage she suffered under the hands of Ryland, Edmund, Timothy, and Cail is beyond damning. She wakes to horrific memories, jumps at her own shadow, and doesn’t know how to overcome the crippling fear that rules her life. No matter how hard she tries to fight it, she flinches at the slightest touch and doesn’t know if she’ll ever be the same. Ilyan gives her warmth, encouragement and love, he hold her as she cries and feeds her his strength in the comfort of his arms. Joclyn’s magic has grown exponentially, she can’t control her power because her fear reigns. Joclyn must learn to face her demons, contain her magic, and harness it to perfection as the prophetic battle against evil gets closer by the day. Jocyln’s heart is a mess. Her head is clouded with darkness, she can’t cope with what went on psychologically and goes into emotional overdrive every time she sets sight on Ryland, she can’t help it and is more confused than ever by her feelings for Ilyan. On top of this, Jocyln’s visions as a Drak don’t bode well for the future. The battle seen so many centuries ago is on the horizon and Joclyn must be ready, the fate of the world depends on her weilding her powers to their optimal ability but her memories keep getting in the way. Jocyln works to pick of the pieces of her fragile mind, her shattered heart, and bursting magic at warp speed but she’s running out of time. The battle looms, Edmond and his cronies have built a deadly army, set to reap utter devastation on the world, destroying the magical community and making cruelty the norm. Jocyln, Ilyan and friends work together, planning to once and for all annihilate Edmund and save the world in the name of good.

***

The Time for the final battle has come.

Edmund’s armies have surrounded the Rioseco Abbey, trapping the few survivors inside. The sight that Ilyan was given a thousand years ago is about to come to pass.

If only Joclyn was able to fight.

Joclyn is tormented by the hallucinations that Cail’s mind has left her with, her magic an uncontrollable torrent that even Ilyan cannot control. Her moments of lucidity are broken by fears of dripping pipes and bleeding walls, and a desire to kill Ryland that she is having trouble trying to ignore.

The sight has shown her power, shown her success, but it has also shown her death – The end of her life something she is not quite willing to give up on yet.

Even past her death, the sight has shown her love, and that love may be the only key to her sanity, to her strength, and to Edmund’s death.

That love may stand in her way, and a single choice may tip the scales and secure their future, or destroy their fate.

PROS:

  • Joclyn goes through a major transformation in this book, she matures, finds herself and grows into a powerful, glorious force to be reckoned with. She’s fierce, she has her insecurities and fears but she pushes through them, faces her darkest nightmares and gravest tormentors head on. Joclyn is stunning in her confidence, she confronts Ovailia with such determination and bravado that she seems unstoppable and destined for triumph. Confession time: Joclyn has never been my favorite character, there was always something I couldn’t quite mesh with but this Joclyn, this brave, open-hearted woman is someone who is as inspiring as she is praiseworthy. Joclyn loses her childish, naïve ways and matures into someone who is able to overcome anything thrown at her.
  • The braid scene. The feels. OMG. I just…I lost it. If your heart has been searching for that moment that is so completely beautiful, honest, and true that it fills you with a glowing warmth that will leave you smiling and walking around on air for days, this is it. The love is just, there are no words. The symbolism, the simple confessions, everything just fits seamlessly, it’s like what you’d imagine soul mates to feel without the cheesy clichés. You will never be able to look at braids as simply a hairstyle again. I find myself noticing braids on the street and smiling that secret smile of contentment and daydreams.
  • Ilyan. Finally, finally, finally, we get an insider’s view of Ilyan’s compassionate, mighty heart. He’s smart, calculating, innovative, a dynamic leader and his devotion to Joclyn will make your heart melt. Even after what you learn, he clings to the smallest sliver of hope, sacrificing everything and subjecting his heart to the deepest hurt for Joclyn’s happiness. Ilyan is a warrior with a golden, brilliant heart. His lines are like poetry. The things he says to Joclyn are not the snarky, dirty lines common in YA now but bold, simple statements that ring with truth. And the Czech is to die for. I speak Russian, which is not too far off to be able to decipher some of the Czech and wow.
  • If you had any doubts about what vindictive, disgusting, evil people Edmund, Ovailia and Timothy are you won’t after this. The extent of their malicious, violent behavior is terrifying, slimy, and all together inspires so much hate and fury that any small victory for good will prompt serious cheering. They’re truly vile and their intentions are some of the most corrupt and disquieting I’ve seen, they’re true villains.
  • The prophecy, the past, and Joclyn and Ilyan’s love all collide in this magnetic give and take as they fight fate despite their dire future. The plot is ingenious. So much of the past is just great storytelling, you’ll never be bored.
  • Joclyn and Ilyan’s love fluctuates between easy chemistry, understanding, soulful love, and childish jealousy. It’s endearing that such a powerhouse couple can still fight over silly things. It makes them more real and their fights bring the story back down from fantasy to reality. They complete each other. They’re constantly touching, their magic mingling, their desire is always there, waiting in the background. It’s sweet, soothing, and just so right.

CONS:

  • The battle was anticlimactic. The cat fight between Joclyn and Ovailia was a touch predictable and the final fight scene was not as complex or violent as expected.
  • The prophecy, the history, the lies, the mysterious magical elements, and Sain’s creepy, possibly nefarious intentions were all new and lots of information at once, felt a tad rushed.

Review: Scorched Treachery-Rebecca Ethington

5/5 Stars

Scorched Treachery (Imdalind, #3)-Rebecca Ethington

17874494

Rereading Scorched Treachery in a packed Starbucks was a lesson in self-control. The urge to cry happened far too often to be comfortable with an audience. Several times I had to reel in my emotions and pause in reading. But was it worth it? Yes, every single, glistening-eyed minute.

Also, Soul of Flame is available on Amazon right NOW. Go get it! Soul of Flame

UPDATE: Now that I’ve read Soul of Flame, which is insanely awesome BTW, I can officially say that so far Scorched Treachery is my favorite in the Imdalind series. What that says about me, well, I haven’t the faintest but I guess my reading tendencies have taken a turn towards the dark side.

We spoke with the subtle movements of fingers, a kiss a promise, a glance-a vow. Soon the language of touch was not enough to say what we wanted to say, so we settled into each other, content to hold hands and stare, happy to simply see each other again.

***

Something deep inside of me was pleading for me to accept that this was hopeless, begging me to save the water for myself, but I couldn’t. I couldn’t abandon him. I would sacrifice myself for him until the very end. Half for me and half for him. Always.

***

I would do anything to protect her, to help her, to let her become what she wanted and needed to be. I would give her my heart, if that were required. She had it until it beat its last.

***

I would protect her for him. I will keep her safe as my soul calls for me to do, but I will never take her from him. She is not mine. I love her more than I have any other. I love her enough that I would rather see her happy than in my possession. My time will come.

Plot: Scorched Treachery is told from the alternating perspectives of Wyn and Ilyan and takes place during the events that occurred in Eyes of Ember (for my review of Eyes of Ember–>Review).

From Goodreads:

While Joclyn is trapped in the tormenting hell of Cail’s mind, the battle around her only continues to grow and spread.
*
Edmund has infiltrated the underground hallways of Prague, guiding the massacre that would end the lives of the last of the great magical race. In her attempts to stop him, Wynifred has been captured and her magic restrained. Chained up in the ancient dungeons of Prague, her fate is left in the hands of her father, who has tried to kill her before.
With Ryland’s screams and Sain’s fragmented sights as her only company, Wyn must rely on something that has been hidden deep inside of her for centuries to help them break free.
*
Ilyan’s whole life has been building up to one purpose. Protect the Silnỳ. He knows what he must do, and he has no doubt in his ability to do so.
But when his father’s magic removes Joclyn’s mind from her body, he is left protecting the shell of the one person he loves. Desperate to find a way to break her free of her prison, he makes a choice. And that one choice changes everything.
Now, Ilyan finds himself bound to Joclyn in a way that he never knew to be possible.
They say that blood is thicker than water, but Black Water burns, and Ilyan’s heart may not be strong enough to keep it pumping through his veins and give the girl he loves back into his brother’s care.
Even if he can, it may not be safe to do so.

PROS:

  • Wyn. I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for this spunky, fiery, energetic whirlwind of a character. Her personality is just so full of life and that sarcastic brand of authenticity that would have even the strongest of men running for cover under her pointed glare. She’s completely compelling. She has so many layers of personality. In some ways she’s like a teenage girl, painting her walls, jamming to her favorite music, watching B-movies, and gossiping with Jos but in others she’s so feisty and smart. She’s quick on her feet and always planning in the most creative, risky ways possible. Her perseverance, her struggle to stand up for what she believes in, to not back down, to take the punches and bravely face whatever in thrown at her is just so remarkable. Wyn is a lesson in what it means to fight against all odds, to never give up on your hopes and to always, always have faith in love.
  • Wyn’s (yes, she most certainly does deserve multiple bullet points) life story is devastating. Heart-breaking is too weak of a term for this. I don’t think I’ve ever cried so much while reading before. I mean wow. Her story is so twisted, full of lies, and cover ups. Everything she thought was real is tossed up in the air and comes crashing back down to slap her in the face. Her memories are traumatizing, her time spent with her family is filled with deceit and paralyzing fear and so much evil. Seriously, winner of most devious family award. I don’t think I’ve seen any group as maddeningly vicious and vindictive since Bellatrix Lestrange and her crew of Death Eaters.
  • The revelations are huge. Opinions will change and you’ll be forced to question everything you thought you knew about some of the characters.
  • This is the first time you really get a taste of what’s going on in the beautiful mind of Ilyan’s and ladies, get ready to swoon. If you thought you loved him before, you have no idea. He’s so level-headed, so self-sacrificing, his heart is so open and full of purpose and love and beauty and light. And his thoughts are like poetry. You FINALLY get to experience his feelings towards Jos, his desperate need to protect her, to cherish her, and to bask in her presence. His sections are like poetry and a military manual combined. They flow between wonderfully sentimental to focused and calculated planning for the fight against Edmond.
  • The plot. While I’m not usually a fan of what is already a great story being retold from another character’s POV this is clearly the exception. While the plot does take place during Eyes of Ember and does contain several events that having read the previous book you will be well aware of, the majority of this book is new, it’s what went on that we didn’t see in the last book, in the peripheral. Ilyan’s scenes, although they’re familiar, his unique vision and interpretation, his emotions make each scene feel new and rejuvenated. We also get to see what Ilyan was up to when Jos was trapped in that horrible place.
  • There are a few graphic, violent scenes that some may be apprehensive to read. There is torture and blood and lots of hurt but it’s written well and saturated in deep emotion and thoughts that really shape the characters and their actions in Soul of Flame.
  • The evil. Sometimes you read a book and you get to the villain and think, that’s it? You feel let down that the big bad monster was really just some weak little person who hardly even really hurt the characters. Timothy, Edmond, their sidekicks, and Cail are the epitome of homicidal sadists. They’re horrifying, so frightening and what they do to the characters you know and love without batting an eye is so much worse than simply being terrifying, it’s sickening.

CONS:

  • There were a couple of typos.
  • So much information and heartbreaking revelations were packed into small sections. Sometimes it was too much and needed to be reread. Especially parts about magical elements and their functions.

ThroughGlass COVER REVEAL

Through Glass Blurb:

Everyone remembered the day the sky went black. The day the sun was wiped from the sky. They remember the wind as it brought in the darkness; the way the earth shook and everything changed.

Everyone remembered the screams as the darkness ate those who were out in the open, those who had surrounded themselves by light, and those who made noise.

Everyone remembered the voice from the sky and the way food disappeared.

At least, that’s what I hoped. I hoped that there was an ‘everyone’ that would remember because I am not sure how many are left, how many survived. Or if anyone did.
I hoped that I wasn’t alone.
I remembered that day.
I remembered because it was the day I became alone.
It was the day that everything was perfect until the monsters took it away. Then the house went silent and the birds stopped singing. It was the day when everyone disappeared, everyone except the boy, the only person I have seen in two years.

The boy I talk to through the glass.

“You deserve to die!”

The tanned skin of his face slowly faded to white before the red of his lips painted blue. He clawed at his neck as an invisible force squeezed the life out of him. I only smiled as I watched him fight it, knowing it was pointless, knowing I wouldn’t let him get away.
