She’s all I could ever want…

I have a reputation around school. Cold. Untouchable. Unfeeling. Only one girl could ever make me want to change and that’s Amanda Winters. Too bad I broke her heart and drove her away.

So to get through the rest of my days in high school, I tell myself I need to focus on more important things. Like taking our football team to championships. Get accepted to the college of my choice. And finish my senior year without wanting to run away from my problems.

But your problems chase after you no matter where you go. And it’s a lot harder when you fight them alone. The longer I go without Amanda, the more I miss her. Her smile. Her laughter. The things she said. How she looked at me like I was the only person who mattered. The way she made me feel…

Why can’t I have everything, including the girl? I’m determined to make things right. And make Amanda mine…

Forever.

It’s the end of summer. Just before I start senior year with my two best friends in the whole world. Dustin and Emily are everything to me. We’ve been inseparable since middle school, and when we’re together, nothing can go wrong.

But things aren’t always what they seem. Em’s turned into a drunken mess who parties too much. Dustin and I have hooked up a few times―and now he’s ready to take our relationship to the next level. Yet I’m not sure I want things to change. I’m scared if I take it any further with Dustin, our friendship will be ruined forever. Then there’s Ryan. The new guy. He’s hot. He flirts way too much. And Em has totally set her sights on him.

So when my best friend betrays me in the worst possible way, guess who’s there to help me pick up the pieces of my broken heart? Ryan. But he’s so confusing. Annoying. Sweet. Sexy. I want to trust him, yet he makes it so hard. What I really want is for everything to go back to the way it was before.

Before I found out that best friends make the worst kind of enemies.

+++Despite being set in high school this is MATURE. Technically it can fall in YA range, but it is categorized as New Adult

Just Friends chronicles the dark side of friendship-when everything falls apart, when heartbreak, jealousy, and boys shake the foundation of their bond. Just Friends is Mean Girls with a side of Heathers, minus the murder.

Although Just Friends is a fairly typical story, friends who fall for a boy and let jealousy, pettiness, and hurt come between them, I could NOT put it down. It was vulgar, catty, a hot mess of angst, and in the same way that Pretty Little Liars and One Tree Hill sucked you into the black hole of their teenage tantrums, fights, and lusting after each other, Just Friends has that same magical and bewildering pull.

This book is more about sex than anything else, despite the friendship drama. It’s always there. I know hormones are raging and what not but holy freaking angst. Seriously. Some sections are pretty graphic in terms of innuendo or just blatant sex talk. Blushing is inevitable. But this is super real. When I think about some of the stuff I heard in high school, this is fairly common. Well, at least where I grew up.

For the life of me, I could not figure out what a sweet girl like Olivia was doing with a friend like Em. She’s literally THE WORST. She’s a jerk. She says some really messed up stuff and throws herself at guys that she knows Olivia likes. It’s pretty repulsive. I know they’ve been friends forever, but people change and there’s only so much rudeness that someone should put up with.

This is a coming of age story. Everyone is on the brink of adulthood so emotions are high and erratic. Everyone is growing. This doesn’t mean they’re maturing. I liked Olivia (Livvy), though her wishy washy confusion and I’m mad, I’m not attitude, bugged me. She went from one extreme to another and jeez for someone who started out so tame, she sure progresses. The shift is fast and didn’t align well with her character. She jumps into things and loses her train of though, it’s like a switch being flipped. Plus, for someone who questions things, she’s SO BLIND.

The love triangle is strong. You were warned. If you don’t like them, read with caution.

***I received this eARC as a gift in exchange for an honest review via The Hype PR.

The Right One is a sweet, charming romance. Full of passion and adorable moments, you’ll sigh, perfectly content to swoon.

PROS:

  • Rebecca is a sweetheart with a past full of heartbreak. From her recent break up to the desperate desire to please her father and frustration with an alcoholic mother, Rebecca is terrified of becoming her parents. After the ridiculously comical break up with her boyfriend of several years, Rebecca is through with pleasing everyone else, she’s finally decided to have “me” time. Funny, endearing, and with just enough sass, Rebecca is made of laughter and someone embarrassing situations that will leave you blushing and giggling.
  • What I absolutely adored about these characters is that there was no sugar-coating, they’re blunt, sometimes crude, and ask the hard questions. The story is honest, real, and could happen to anyone. The fact that it’s so believable made for a more powerful read and characters that anyone can relate to.
  • Elliot is sugar-sweet and a bit naughty. He flirts, he’s playful, and he does so many thoughtful things that will make you fall in love with him. He’s perfect. Sure, he might not have his whole life figured out but he’s attentive, charming, and insatiable. 😉 Elliot is willing to go to any lengths to make Rebecca smile and those bacon sandwiches, definitely trying those. ❤
  • When Elliot’s secrets come out, Rebecca’s heart opens up. It’s truly a beautiful, heart-warming, and intensely emotional evolution to read. Rebecca learns so much about herself and grows up into this fantastic, incredibly kind woman, even better than she was before. Together, Rebecca and Elliot are magic.

CONS:

  • Some sections dragged where nothing much happened but sexual encounters. Scenes vary from graphic to brief and cut off.
  • Rebecca’s relationship with most of her friends was awkward and even she admits to them being sort of cold and self-absorbed. Other than her past, there’s no real connection or warmth between them. There are momentary sparks that fizzle out quickly.
  • Drama was resolved extremely quickly and with no protest. The bizarre nature of some of the relationship conflicts seemed like they would spur a full of meltdown at times and…nothing. No one objected, everyone was understanding. With all the emotions running rampant and pregnant people, that there wasn’t a shouting match was shocking and a little disappointing.

Bored and stifled, she looks for ways to break free. A casual relationship with her next door neighbour becomes her dirty little secret. Elliot isn’t like the boys Rebecca grew up with. He bounces from job to job, and is a part time musician. Her father’s worst nightmare.

Rebecca swore off getting too deeply involved. She’s sick of secrets. Her last attempt at grown-up romance was blown apart by them, and Elliot has secrets of his own. Despite everything, could Elliot be the right one?

Features characters from the previous book in the series, but is a stand alone.
