Rex Toberman is obnoxious and pretentious. So what if he’s the star quarterback? So what if my father is dating his mother? I can’t wait until he’s out of my life for good.
The day our parents announce their impending wedding becomes the worst day of my existence. Not only has Rex cemented himself in my social circle, but he’s about to cement himself into my family.

I don’t trust his mother. And I don’t want anything to do with her egotistical, womanizing son, but deep down the only way to get rid of them both is to do something unimaginable with Rex himself. I’m playing with fire, dancing in the flames of his wicked grin, and soon enough I’m melting. The last thing I want is to become another victim of Rex Toberman’s egotistical, womanizing ways.

But there’s something about those bedroom eyes, that lewd smile, that body made of steel I cannot resist.

Yes, getting rid of my soon-to-be stepbrother is tougher than I ever imagined—especially now that I never want him to leave.

Review: Broken Heart by Tammy Faith

brokenGoodreads/AmazonsynI met Cris when I was five years old. He was my brother’s best friend. We started out as friends and eventually evolved to first kiss, first crush, first love. First everything.

I was an innocent little girl. Stupid. Naive. Cris and I promised each other forever.

Right then, we didn’t know that promises were so hard to keep. I was corrupted, each piece of me smashed against my foolish and childish wishes. Who would have thought that my boyfriend would become the vivid incarnation of my own personal demon?

Crisanto Tauli and Phoebe Stephen were happy.

Until that day.

The day she can’t seem to remember, and he can’t seem to forget. The day that she, ruled by her fears, left him. The day that she broke both of their hearts.

Now she has to face him, and her secrets, once again.

CONTAINS TRIGGERS & Mature Content: rape

PROS:

  • This is not only a story of heartbreaking recovery and love, but a coming of age story as well. Phoebe grows exponentially, she becomes confident in herself, her sexuality, and finds her worth as a person. At the same time, she’s mature enough to realize that she’s too dependent on her boyfriend and needs time to become who she’s destined to be (though this doesn’t last too long). Phoebe’s pain is palpable and raw, her memories of the incident are haunting and terrible. The words her rapist whispered to her stayed with me for days.
  • Depictions of therapy and coping mechanism post-trauma are spot on and inspirational. They grant hope and show just how hard working through PTSD is, no matter how far you’ve come, there will always be triggers and memories.
  • Cris and Phoebe’s romance is playful and sometimes extremely serious. It’s made of rough patches, and bitter fights, of pushing each other away and running back with open arms. There are tears, and pain, and oh so much happiness. They are a shining example of overcoming all obstacles for the one you love.
  • Phoebe’s interactions with Giselle were hilarious. They show her spunky, sarcastic side and you get a true picture of their friendship.

CONS:

  • Interesting side note: I’m from Florida, where this is set, and attended FSU, so I was excited that part of the story was set where I went to university…but there was ZERO description. Nothing. Like not even mention of local bars or buildings or even the name of the football stadium where the MAIN CHARACTER played football. This took away from the story. It’s not the only section that lacks description to make the story seem more real, more colorful, instead of a whole bunch of telling. The most description was actually of the sexual assault and sex scenes, which kind of displaced the whole story.
  • The story digressed as it went. Instead of development, towards the end it became a whole slew of sex scenes, so many that it lost the magic of their romance and felt a little monotonous.
  • The pacing was off. Some moments that felt like they should have been extended were too short. There are leaps in time that are a bit confusing and will take you some time to adjust. The story goes from high school almost to the end of college.

On track to graduate early? CHECK.

Social life? …..yeah, about that….

With just a few weeks until she graduates, Antonella DeLuca’s beginning to worry that maybe she hasn’t had the full college experience. (Okay… Scratch that. She knows she hasn’t had the full college experience). So Nell does what a smart, dedicated girl like herself does best. She makes a “to do” list of normal college activities.

Item #1? Hook up with a jock.

Rusk University wide receiver Mateo Torres practically wrote the playbook for normal college living. When he’s not on the field, he excels at partying, girls, and more partying. As long as he keeps things light and easy, it’s impossible to get hurt… again.

But something about the quiet, shy, sexy-as-hell Nell gets under his skin, and when he learns about her list, he makes it his mission to help her complete it. Torres is the definition of confident (And sexy. And wild), and he opens up a side of Nell that she’s never known. But as they begin to check off each crazy, exciting, normal item, Nell finds that her frivolous list leads to something more serious than she bargained for. And while Torres is used to taking risks on the field, he has to decide if he’s willing to take the chance when it’s more than just a game. Together they will have to decide if what they have is just part of the experiment or a chance at something real.

And don’t miss the first two books in the Rusk University Series…

Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

cooltext1790897456 copyIt started with unspoken animosity. The bitter bite of jealousy. And now its full blown hate.

It was during my first football game that I first felt the first chill of hate. I looked it right in the eyes and felt its sticky tentacles reach out for me. I’d never experienced something so cold and empty before.

The effect of that look lingered, like an unspoken promise, long after it was gone.

Becoming a couple – becoming the other half of a campus celebrity wasn’t easy. I let down walls guarding my heart and he looked past my glasses and accident prone tendencies. Romeo and I are an unlikely match, a #nerd and a jock. But we made it.

And we’re happy.

Zach doesn’t want us to be happy. He wants Romeo to pay for getting him kicked out of Omega and for the night he spent in jail. He’s going to use anything and everything he can to get his revenge. Including me.

As the weather on campus grows cold and the days become dark, revenge becomes the center of someone’s life and the happiness Romeo and I worked so hard for is threatened.

I can’t help but worry that our love is going to be overshadowed by hate.

Romeo caught me around the elbow and gently pulled me around. “What’s wrong?”

“You used to be just like him,” I blurted out. Then I slammed my lips together, cursing myself for not thinking before I spoke.

Romeo’s brows drew together. “Braeden?”

I nodded. “You liked to have fun. You hit on a different girl every day…” I paused and took a breath. “Pretty girls.”

Something very close to anger lit up his eyes and burned there like the hottest part of a flame. Before I could backpedal, his large hands slid beneath my arms and hooked beneath my shoulders. Romeo lifted me off the ground like it was easy, like it didn’t even take effort. My feet dangled in the air as he drew me up so we were eye to eye.

“A thousand of those girls”—he made a slight motion with his head toward Braeden—“couldn’t even make up one of you.”

“Romeo,” I whispered, caught up in the molten blue flame flickering in his gaze.

“You know I was like that once. I’ve never made a secret of it. But you’re it for me now, Rim. There’s no one else. There never could be.”

Even though he spoke softly, I still felt the room around us listening. My neck still prickled with a thousand stares, but I didn’t care. His words pierced me. They took the feelings of doubt creeping up inside me and totally vanquished them.

I smiled and something in his eyes relaxed. Worry I hadn’t seen until that moment disappeared. He gave me one of his oh so charming lopsided smiles and pulled me closer to kiss me.

Wish You Were Here

One last summer before college on beautiful Tybee Island is supposed to help Sienna forget. But how can she? This is where her family spent every summer before everything changed, before the world as she knew it was ripped away.

But the past isn’t easily left behind. Especially when Sienna keeps having episodes that take her back to the night she wants to forget. Even when she meets the mysterious Austin Dobbs, the guy with the intense blue eyes, athlete’s body, and weakness for pralines who scooped her out of trouble when she blacked out on River Street.

When she’s with Austin, Sienna feels a whole new world opening up to her. Austin has secrets, and she has history. But caught between the past and the future, Sienna can still choose what happens now…

4/5 Stars

Rewind to You is a sweet summer love story that evolves into so much more. It’s passionate and full of the sort of soul-searing emotional trauma that breaks and rebuilds characters and opens the reader’s heart.

PROS:

  • The city, River Street is a quaint and magical little town. It radiates southern charm and serendipity, there’s an enchanting feeling that anything can happen on this street. The people are friendly, eclectic, and all have these micro-stories that add authenticity to the setting. You easily feel like you could stumble upon this tiny vacation spot and fall in love with its simple atmosphere.
  • The candy shop scene might be one of the most romantic and playful dates I’ve ever read. It was perfect. Sienna is bursting with light and laughter, she’s absolutely dazzled by the chocolate fantasy land, it’s like she’s at Disney World for the first time. Her happiness is infectious and real, I challenge you not to smile during this scene. Seriously, it’s impossible. Ditto for the pier rainstorm scene.
  • Sienna is incredible. The guilt she feels over her father’s horrible death is crippling. Every ounce of hurt is magnified by the tension in her household and this feeling of being trapped. Sienna wants to make her father proud, has to walk on eggshells around her fragile, moody mother, and deal with the pressures of family expectations. All of her life, Sienna has been pushed into things, desperate to make everyone happy and has sacrificed who she is along the way. Sienna no longer knows what she wants and her confusion is understandable. Trying to live with the memories of the gruesome car crash is a psychological war that takes over her life physically. Her fainting spells at memories of the night her father died put her in precarious and potentially deadly situations. The opening scene with the pervs hassling her and the anxiety that makes her vulnerable to their advances was extremely scary. The fact that her anxiety, the visions or rewinding she suffers during her fainting spells could kill her because she loses control is far more terrifying than the fainting itself. Sienna is far from perfect, she ignores her heart and forgives easily and that sets her up for pain and lies. Yet, Sienna has had to live with so much agony and guilt that it’s amazing she can smile at all. She’s truly an uplifting character.
  • Rewind to You is not only a love story but tackles many issues that should be discussed but haven’t really, like PTSD, ADHD, and bipolar disorder. Mental illness is a dominant part of the lives of those who suffer and it’s hard to understand from an outsider’s perspective. Johnston did a wonderful job really getting at the energy, randomness, and whirlwind of emotions and reactions in Spenser’s character. That he can be a rowdy, loving child one moment and not grasp reality from Batman in the next is startling to read and grants the reader not only insight but understanding.
  • Grab your tissues. Trust me. There are tears of happiness, sadness, fear, and anger that just pour from this book.
  • The concept of forgiveness is sometimes overlooked and taken for granted. It was front and center in this book and made the characters that much more admirable. If I was in Sienna’s shoes, I don’t know that I would have had the strength or capacity to let it go.
  • Austin is an all around great guy. He’s nice to everyone, be it penniless musicians on the street or rich jerks he just met. Austin is open, honest, and tells it like it is. He doesn’t back down but voices his opinions and tries to view the world from many perspectives. When Austin falls for Sienna, it’s a rush of elation. His attraction to her is more than just physical, it’s to everything about her. His sections, the way he describes her just begs for a chorus of awwws and pleasant sighs. Austin is persistent and slightly cocky but doesn’t let it go to his head, if anything he’s oddly humble. Austin comes up with the most enchanting, creative dates. I would LOVE to see this as a film.

CONS:

  • The cover is a little off-putting. It’s zoomed in so close and while I love the color scheme and how it seems to brighten the contrast with their skin, it’s like they’re under a microscope. The photo would have been just as intimate, if not more, zoomed out.
  • The beginning of the book, especially the scenes with Austin and his friends in the car read really immature and the word choice felt forced and unrealistic. That some drugged up, party boys would use such babyish words didn’t make sense and had me staring at the page puzzled.
  • Kyle is such a piece of garbage, he’s a disgusting human being and that Sienna can even let him put his hands on her is just perplexing. The dog. Speechless.
