Guest Post: On Writing Strong Female Characters and Other Musings by Jennifer Siddoway

2 - Author Logo

As Rory Gilmore once said, “I live in two worlds, one is a world of books.” I have never felt more connected to a character than in that moment, because I too, have lived a hundred different lives through the beautifully crafted pages of a novel. An author’s ability to paint a world with words is something that amazes me to this day, and will continue to do so for years to come.

I never thought that I would become an author, not even in my wildest dreams. Sometimes it still feels like I’m an imposter who has infiltrated this community and has not yet been discovered for the fraud she is. Yet, here I am about to release book two in the Earthwalker Trillogy and it finally feels like I’m treading water.

The heroine in this series, Wynn Hendricks, is a headstrong, fiery redhead who desperately wants to finish high school when a Demon Lord shows up in her bedroom and declares her soul his property. To regain her freedom, she must conquer the seven deadly sins. In doing so, she finds herself caught between the realms of Heaven, Hell, and Earth, with the angel Caleb as her only ally.

Cover 1.1
I’m a big fan of strong female characters, and in Wynn’s story I really wanted to show her rising above this terrible situation and coming out on top. She doesn’t need a knight in shining armor to protect her, but would rather have someone love and support her while she rescues herself. Her journey covers a three-book arc that I’m hoping will show growth and depth of character over time. Each of the Demon Lords are unique and come at her in different ways, which I found fascinating to write about. I didn’t want the straightforward, hand over fist, showdown that you’d expect. They’re clever and come at her sideways, hoping that Wynn will become overconfident or make some fatal mistake. One of the things I like about them is that they do not make idle threats. Aidan and the other Demon Lords follow through on what they promise and that is terrifying, especially when they don’t play by the rules – nothing is off the table.

1

After tragedy strikes the Hendricks family, Wynn leaves for college, hoping the Demon Lords follow her. She is reunited with Caleb after his fall from grace. Now, they no longer have to hide their feelings for one another. Together, they prepare for Wynn’s three remaining trials and encounter another demon who has infiltrated the Mortal Realm. Charlene is strong and beautiful, with complete control of her demonic powers – everything Wynn hopes to achieve one day.

The Demon Lords aren’t holding back, but they’re not the only ones who are conspiring against her. Maya is on the warpath and blames Wynn for Caleb’s decision to leave. Wynn learns that to defeat Aidan once and for all will come at a terrible price, taking her away from the ones she loves most.

With the help of some unlikely allies, can Wynn defeat the Demon Lords and finally make Aidan pay?

ExcerptHis lips broke from mine and left a trail of kisses down my neck, sending a jolt of hot confusion coursing through my body. Electric tingles ran up and down along my spine in a delicious need to hold him and have his body pressed against me. I tilted my head to give him better access and let out an involuntary sigh. “Caleb …” l breathed out dreamily.

“I love you.”

He cradled my face in his hands and pulled away briefly so that he could whisper, “You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to hear you say that.”

I breathed out a ragged laugh before kissing him again and losing myself completely in his touch. My body ignited beneath his hands and I all I could think about was this magnificent creature had pledged himself to me. His lips were on me once again, and I wrapped myself around him like a snake in another one of his passionate kisses. A moment later, I felt myself being lifted off the ground as he carried me back into the apartment.

When I read City in Embers, I was wowed. I LOVED that book but this one is even better. Sometimes the sequel falls flat, no worries, just as fresh and action-packed as the first book with an added layer of carnal lust.

PROS:

  • An adrenaline rush from the first page to the last, The Barrier Between will consistently keep your heart racing. From the thrill of the Fight Club-esque arena to the fae infested wild of South America, every page is a new adventure.
  • Sprig is hilarious. His antics are adorable. A spritely, spirited little fae monkey with an obsession with honey and all things sugar. His comments are spot on and sarcastic, bringing tons of light and laughter to a terrible situation. From his love of reality tv to his narcolepsy, every scene is filled with joy. Plus, his curses are the cutest.
  • The beloved Viking. I didn’t think it was possible for him to get any hotter but I was WAY wrong. Ryker is sex and sin, lust and angst, desire and animalistic intentions all rolled in one very sexy package. Gruff, angry, and with a tendency towards violence, Ryker is a terrifying adversary, his whole image is menacing between his huge physique and BA ax, there’s nothing this man can’t slaughter. What’s more, when Ryder is vulnerable it’s deliciously sinful. His compassion, his battle scars, his dark past all make him a complex, deep, and devoted man. Some scenes he’s sweet and kind and others, holy hotness, get ready to fan yourself.
  • Zoey is changed. She’s not the hardened criminal she once was, there’s a softness to her that’s very appealing especially accompanied by her rage induced tenacity in battle. Fiesty, fierce, and a killer fighter with her fists, Zoey’s alter ego, the Avenging Angel has come a long way. Above everything, Zoey is a survivor. She’ll fight until the last making her incredibly brave but what is even more admirable is her decision to open her heart to love again. Dreamy sigh.
  • OMG the chemistry. The sexual tension and frustration is almost overwhelming it’s so strong. Every encounter is a heady mix of fury and attraction, they want to punch each other as often as they want to rip their clothes off.
  • New characters were a pleasant surprise. Heading back to the fight ring to meet AB, tossing in a greater look at the illusive Amara, and introducing Cryogen-that man, think Jack Sparrow.

CONS:

  • Some dramatic scenes were almost too easily resolved. Just when things were starting to get dire, some twist of fate pulled them of the danger zone. I.E. the Avenging Angel fight.

cooltext1790897456 copyWhat if other worlds existed alongside your own? What if you could travel through them and truly escape reality?

Sloan and Harley Glass were born moments apart; but, despite their differences, the sixteen-year-old twins couldn’t be closer. They’ve held their tongues each and every time their mother has uprooted them—often moving across the country with little notice. They’ve learned to accept change. But what is Mom running from?

They discover they’re travelers—half-descendants of those who can traverse an entire universe of parallel worlds known as fractals. When the past catches up, Harley is kidnapped and taken to one of those distant worlds. Now, Sloan must garner her courage and find a way to rescue her sister. Traversing the worlds isn’t the hard part; it’s surviving the elements and the creatures lying in wait to destroy everything in their path.

Will the Glass sisters be able to save the fractal worlds from the kidnapper, or will everything fracture and crumble around them?

cooltext1790896132 copy3.5/5 Stars

***I received this book as a gift in exchange for an honest review via Casey L. Bond.

Fractured Glass is a brilliant mix of science fiction, paranormal, romance, and friendship. An anthology unlike I’ve ever experienced, Fractured Glass is a collaboration between 5 authors who each contribute a piece to the overall story. If the author bios hadn’t been between each section I would have assumed they were written by the same writer, everything flows seamlessly together into one cohesive, imaginative journey.

PROS:

  • The fractals, the stacked worlds, the mix of physics with paranormal was creative and colorful. It allowed for descriptive settings, unique situations, and unconventional characters. The sheer number of paranormal creatures and scenarios was a magnetic and explosive combination of awesome.
  • Sloan is so much stronger than she knows. Her growth is profound as she realizes who she is without her sister and what she’s capable for becoming. Sloan is smart, crafty, and a little nerdy but she has tons of heart and though she can be a tad oblivious she’ll stop at nothing to save those she loves. Sloan is brave and what I loved about her was that she never pretended to be something she was not. When she had misgivings, it showed, she she was scared, she shook, when she felt attraction she blushed, she never pretended to be more by herself.
  • Calix is sexy, chivalrous and mysterious. The perfect blend of knight in shinning armor and darkness.
  • Diego is adorably geeky. He’s obsessed with computers, wears glasses, and has a heart of gold. He takes compassion and protectiveness to a new level. Diego faces his fears to claim the heart of the girl he loves.
  • Together, Diego and Sloan are cute. They are made of blushing and subtle flirtation that turns into embarrassment.

CONS:

  • Harley was kind of fickle and obnoxious. She lies to her sister, jeopardizes everything and when it comes time to have it out with her twin, there’s no yelling, only absolute forgiveness. Like many aspects of this story, things that were kind of a big deal were far too easily resolved or just simply dismissed.
  • The battle scenes were anticlimactic and short. All of the build up and certainty of David’s strength and sinister intentions culminated in a battle that could have been epic but instead felt rushed, staggered, and disappointing. David’s character was marked as one who liked to inflict pain, cause terror, and leave his mark wherever he went. The kind of guy who prolonged torment and when it came down to it, he was cocky but scared.
  • Some sections felt remarkably forgetful. The entire plot centered around Harley and Sloan’s magical map and when it came time, after it being remarked upon over and over, they forgot about it and act as if they have no clue what it is. I was confused by the missing links in their knowledge from one section to the next.

***I received this eARC as a gift in exchange for an honest review and in participation with this blitz.

City of Embers is an unexpected thrill ride, packed with surprises that will throw and shock you into a serious adrenaline rush. Complete and utter captivation.

PROS:

  • Zoey is fierce. Her resilience is powerful and admirable. She’s daring and beautiful, she wields so much strength. She fights tooth and nail for her life and those she loves. Her past is full of bad decisions made to survive and horror story foster homes. It’s amazing how far she’s come and with such confidence in her ability. Emotions are volitile and  when Zoey crashes, it’s brutal and hard. Zoey learns to trust and open her heart when she least expects it. Sarcastic, short-fused and prone to flying fists, Zoey is a take charge, risk-taker that shields her emotions with her words and dirty street fighting.
  • Zoey and Ryker have killer chemistry. The violent, explosive kind that leaps off the pages and pushes the story forward in a series of lust and unfulfilled desire. The angst is a drug that will leave you feeling tipsy and dissatisfied but thirsting for more. They’re aggressive, angry, they throw punches and insults but the heat is constant. Despite a lifetime of learned hatred for their opposing species, their mutual loss and hardheaded tendencies bring them together.
  • Sprig is hilarious. The pervy little sprite is energetic, daring and completely adorable with his honey addiction and off-kilter TV references. It’s easy to fall in love with his spirit and playfulness even though he’s a constant source of disruption that effectively blocks the culmination of Ryker and Zoey’s feelings. The frustration is INTENSE.
  • The violence is extreme. The bloodshed is extensive and graphic, deaths come fast and action scenes escalate so quickly it’s hard to keep up. The story is fast-paced and moves even though here are lags the danger is ever-present.
  • The story does contain triggers. Zoey’s past is dark, full of heartache and abuse but it is not really detailed, more suggestive than blunt. There are a few scenes that feature assault. I appreciated that the author included just enough without flashbacks.
  • Variety of fae and powers was quirky and inventive. Each character, no matter how small or fleeting has unique features and dominant traits. They’re all memorable and that’s quite a feat.

CONS:

  • Relationships and love, whether it be sisterly or sexual were a huge part of what made Zoey tick and yet, the back story was abrupt and felt insignificant to grasp their connection. Yes, you could feel the love and longing but it wasn’t as poignant as it could have been.
  • Zoey’s life as a collector and what they do as an organization was missing its history for most of the plot. When it was revealed it was a rapid-fire info session and the climax was like a slap in the face revelation.

All her life, Breena had always dreamed about fairies as though she lived among them…beautiful fairies living among mortals and living in Feyland.

In her dreams, he was always there the breathtakingly handsome but dangerous Winter Prince, Kian, who is her intended. When Breena turns sixteen, she begins seeing fairies and other creatures mortals don’t see. Her best friend Logan suddenly acts very protective.

Then she sees Kian, who seems intent on finding her and carrying her off to Feyland. That’s fine and all, but for the fact that humans rarely survive a trip to Feyland, a kiss from a fairy generally means death to the human unless that human has fairy blood in them or is very strong, and although Kian seemed to be her intended, he seems to hate her and wants her dead.
