She’s the cure that could save him. If only she could remember how.

Two years ago, 20 year-old Samantha Knight experienced a life-altering trauma. Unfortunately, she can’t remember what it was. Previously outgoing, fun, and carefree—it’s as if someone flipped a switch on Sam’s insides. Now, she’s afraid of everything, socially awkward, and convinced she’s going crazy. As Beyoncé would say, she woke up like this. Sam tries her best to juggle college classes, work, and the nosiest roommate ever, but behind the curtain, Sam’s life is all about keeping a firm grip on her own mind. And life is kicking her ass.

Alex Channing has only one enemy in this world: werewolves. Born and raised to fight in the supernatural military, he has become an expert at hunting and killing rabid werewolves. But when Alex is bitten and infected, he finds himself racing against a ticking clock for his own survival.

Alex’s search for a cure leads him finally to an oracle in a seaside town in California. And she gives him the reading of a lifetime. The key to his cure is a girl who forgets things, cries spontaneously, and might just be insane. And the only way she can save him is to do the one thing Alex knows is impossible: she has to remember.

INCLUDED IN THIS BOX SET:

BOOK 1 – DIRTY BLOOD

I killed a girl last night. I did it with my bare hands and an old piece of pipe I found lying next to the dumpster. But that’s not the part that got me. The part that scared me, the part I can’t seem to wrap my head around and still has me reeling, was that when she charged me, her body shifted – and then she was a wolf. All snapping teeth and extended claws. But by the time I stood over her lifeless body, she was a girl again. That’s about the time I went into shock… And that was the moment he showed up.

Now, all I can do is accept the truths that are staring me in the face. One, Werewolves do exist. And two, I was born to kill them.

BOOK 2 – COLD BLOOD

Wood Point Academy is not at all what I expected.

For one thing, it looks like a cross between military school and Buckingham Palace. Everyone stares, the floors shine so bright you can see your reflection in them from a mile away, and no one smiles. Unless they’re kicking your butt in the process.

At least I’ve got plenty to take my mind off the fact that my psycho cousin, Miles De’Luca, keeps calling and declaring his love and promising to come for me just as soon as he’s destroyed anyone standing in our way. Wes isn’t going to like that idea. So between Miles, Wood Point’s evil welcoming committee, and the drill sergeant hottie trainer from hell, I just keep asking myself, how did I end up here?

BOOK 3 – BLOOD BOND

Hybrids.

If I had to choose one word to sum up all of my problems, this would be it.

Without hybrids, I wouldn’t have to watch my best friend slowly becoming a monster. Without hybrids, I could let go of the mentality “hunt or be hunted.” CHAS wouldn’t be scouring the Earth, intent on slaughtering and using Alex to do it. Without hybrids, I wouldn’t have to be on guard that losing my temper meant losing my shape. There would be no monster inside me, struggling to get out.

Then again, without hybrids, I wouldn’t have Wesley St. John.

BOOK 4 – BLOOD RULE

Forty-six.

That’s how many hybrids survived the Hunter attack in the woods after I revived them with an injection of my blood. That’s how many followed me home to Frederick Falls. And that’s how many were now mentally linked to me through a blood bond.

Two days. Three valium. Fourteen hours of sleep.

That’s what it took to realize I wasn’t losing my mind as a result of the noise in my own head.

Sixteen.

That’s how many days have passed since I almost killed Alex. That’s how many days I’ve sat by his bedside, waiting for him to wake up. To ease the guilt, to understand his betrayal, to remember the exact shade of brown in his eyes.

Zero.

That’s my chances of skating by with Gordon Steppe and the Hunter Council. They want me for questioning. I’m afraid what’ll happen if I give them answers.

  • The plot is a thrilling race against time and the sinister intentions of Steppe and CHAS. It’s open season on all things furry and Tara and her friends must escape, plan, and fight. The utter uncertainty and endless danger makes everything feel unexpected and dangerous. From scene to scene high tension and chaos are possible and probable, and whether or not Tara and co. will make it out alive is anyone’s guess.
  • The climax. THAT CLIFFHANGER. OMG.
  • Tara’s meetings with Alex, her persistent spot at his bedside is as infuriating as it is heartwarming. Her talks with him, her hope, and the way she clutches his hand and begs for him to awake is heartbreaking and so sad, her need for Alex is very real and raw. He is part of her and without him she feels lost. What’s killing me is Tara’s internal dialogue about her actions with Alex, his place as a friend, and the second guessing she is always doing about her feelings.
  • Once again Astor is one of my favorite characters. He’s totally unstable and does the most wildly hilarious things one moment and is sort of a jerk in the next. The slurpee quest and the Hollywood horror movie reference was wonderful and lighthearted in a ridiculous sort of way.
  • Victoria is back and she’s fabulous. While outwardly cold and a bit toxic in her sarcastic, blatantly rude comments, she’s real and her honesty starts to reveal the girl beneath, the one heartbroken over her parents fate, and scared of what’s to come.
  • George has gained so much confidence, he’s unafraid to call Tara out on her wallowing and force her to work through her issues. He pushes her and serves as a therapist to sift out her real issues. He doesn’t sugarcoat anything and really gets her, giving the reader a better insight into Tara’s mind at times when she doesn’t know herself.
  • Wes has stepped up a teeny bit, he’s still mushy and romantic, making heartfelt, beautiful proclamations of love to Tara but he’s not blindly agreeing with her to appease her. Wes holds Tara when she’s falling apart, trying to keep all the pieces together and things get worse for Tara and the group as whole. He’s a leader, coming up with solutions and connecting the dots while Tara goes through her moments of darkness and desolation. He’s stable, powerful, and even though he’s having a really hard time as well, comes through for Tara as someone to lean on and stand beside in battle.
cooltext1552740461 copy
  • Tara is a mess. Her head is so clouded by her constant obsessing over her problems and the stress of the overall situation that she wavers between completely reckless and shutting down. Everyone gets frustrated with her and I was in serious book throwing mode. Because of her situation, her desperation and loss of self is understandable but the extent to which she blocks out reason and follows her reckless and emotional downward spiral is a little much. Tara seems really confused, she has no clue what she wants and despite attempts at figuring it out, she’s so impatient that it doesn’t really get resolved. Several characters call her out on her behavior but she puts up a wall, she doesn’t want to hear it and this has disastrous effects.
  • The scene with Alex near the end felt random, it didn’t serve a purpose and was kind of pointless. Plus, the time it took could have been more effectively used in forming a more solid plan for rescue. While the moments shared between Tara and Alex were some of my favorite and it did bring Tara out of her depressive funk mildly, her friends agreeing to risk everything for this meeting felt off and didn’t make sense.
cooltext1602387936 copy

“Hey, sleepyhead,” I said into the silence.

Alex’s doctor insisted coma patients had been known to wake up claiming to hear the voices of those who’d visited while they were under. He’d said I should talk as often as possible. Sometimes, I felt silly doing it, but other times, like today, it was nice to be able to vent without judgment.

Other people’s reactions had a tendency to weigh heavily. I was already carrying an entire pack’s worth of emotion. I didn’t need any more. And this way, I could tell Alex absolutely anything, including things I’d never say if he were awake.

So while I sat, I told him about all that had happened in the last few days: Nick, Vera’s collapse, my expulsion, and the growing certainty that Steppe wanted to do more than dissolve a peace treaty and kick me out of school.

“It’s building toward something,” I said. “And I don’t know what it is, but it’s … close. Like it’s right around the corner.” I looked down at my hands and realized I’d been twisting them together. I freed my fingers and reached out, wrapping my fingers gently around Alex’s.

“Honestly, I’m afraid to look around that corner. I know whatever’s waiting is going to be bigger than me. Bigger than I’m capable of. And it would be so much easier to handle if you were awake. At least then your sarcasm would make me determined to beat whatever this is. But with you like this… I need you to wake up, okay?”

And I need to know I didn’t kill you.

“Look, you’re cute, but you’re not cute enough to keep me from going off on you for being an idiot. – Cambria to Alex in Cold Blood

“You’d kiss me back right now if I kissed you,” he said, and I tried to decide whether to even attempt denial. “But then you’d remember him and you’d feel bad for it.” -Alex to Tara in Cold Blood

Book Three

John.

It was a wedge between Alex and me, his wanting to join these teams. The fact that he was volunteering to kill something that represented a part of me—a bigger part than I was willing to admit—was hard.

“Which team?” I asked quietly.

“A scouting team to start, but if I do well,” he shrugged, “I should be promoted quickly.”

I nodded, not trusting my voice, and stared at a pile of nuts and bolts on the tailgate.

He sighed and dropped the wrench. “Say something.”

“Like what?”

“I don’t know, but your silence is weirding me out. Usually you just yell or wave your arms or something.”

“I’ll remember that for future arguments.” As soon as I said it, my eyes watered. What future? This was it.

“Tara …” Alex took my hand.

“Don’t,” I whispered, but he ignored it and laced his fingers through mine.

“I’ll miss you. Will you miss me?”

All I could do was nod. He leaned closer, his eyes on my mouth. His free hand traced an invisible line down my jaw and rested on my shoulder. I held my breath, sure he was going to kiss me. I had no idea what I would do if he did. My feet became anchors, holding me in place.

At the last minute before our lips touched, he exhaled. His breath was warm on my lips before he leaned away. He let go of my hand and wrapped his arms around me, pulling me into a tight embrace. I hugged him back and tried to ignore the sting in my eyes and throat. We didn’t move for a long time.

4/5 STARS

PROS:

  • Tara learns and grows, she struggles against who she is and finally has to face it head on. Her fight against the animal within her is inspired, raw, and full of her own insecurities about herself. She’s completely brave and self-sacrificing, she never doubts her morals and will give up everything to protect her loved ones. The girl is fierce and independent but isn’t perfect, she’s still not as confident in herself as she should be and as the story progresses, learns to have faith in her abilities.
  • Alex. Every single time. Alex. The tension between Tara and Alex is palpable. It’s like the elephant in the room, it’s always there lurking beneath the surface, eager to slip out if Tara would only give in. Alex has some of the best lines, they’re straightforward and to the point. He’s confident and knows what he wants and it’s magnetic and oh so sexy. The running scene. That is all.
  • Blood Bond ends on a horrifying cliff hanger that will leave you wanting to punch something or throw the book at the wall. The utter and total desperation to move on to the next book, to know what happened is almost crippling. I finished and immediately bought the fourth book. I couldn’t help myself, it’s that good.
  • Olivia is a wicked, vindictive, and sickeningly evil human being. Her sadistic, brutal tendencies are paired with a hysteria that is beyond just crazy, she’s lost it. Thirsting for vengeance and blood, she’ll stop at nothing to dish out pain and torture. Olivia is a brilliantly written, unexpected antagonist that lives up to her reputation.
  • The scenes of violence and gore are described meticulously, each desperate, agonizing moment is so precise, the fear has you right there with Tara, pushing her forward, rooting for her even as she suffers.
  • The relationship between George and Tara is powerful, complex, and so creative. It adds another dimension to their role as friends and puts a spin on how Tara interacts with Wes and Alex. Their easy understanding, conveyed without words and through shared feelings really opens George up as a character. You finally get to see the truly compassionate, bashful, and caring guy underneath the vague picture we got in Dirty Blood.
  • Astor is awesome. He’s that wacky, and unstable genius that leaves you guessing. His story is fascinating, all the secrets and knowledge add another dimension of mistrust about the CHAS system and the nature of humanity in general.
  • Jeeves is hilarious. He’s one of those small cameo characters that pops in and out at the most random times. He doesn’t say much but his presence is enough to earn a small smile every time.
  • Cambria has grown so much in this book. She’s had to deal with some rough things but her perspective has opened up and her heart is so full. She’s still sarcastic and a teeny bit odd but this is a new side to her character that will make you think a little differently about the girl beneath the edgy visage.
  • Cord. Cord is a puzzling character to understand, she’s hard, jaded, and sarcastic in the most blunt and cutting of ways but her softness when it comes out is heartbreaking. Her sadness, when she loses it is staggering, it’s enough to put everything in perspective. Cord has a tough exterior, she’s had to be fierce and a killing machine but sometimes, she’s just a girl and this juxtaposition of personality traits is brilliantly done. Each time it’s a surprise.

CONS:

  • Foreshadowing was a little heavy. It took away from some of the climax.
  • Some scenes were slow and a bit predictable.
  • Logan got lost in the story, his space was fleeting.
  • Wes is a tad too understanding. He doesn’t get angry and he really should. This is a change from his character in the earlier books and while it is probably his trust in Tara and love for her that makes him this way, a little jealousy or an angry grumble would be more believable.

Two Seattle 16-year-olds, Jatred and Jasmira, are not your typical star-crossed lovers. They are not even your typical Shape Shifters. Sure, they try to live an ordinary life. At least, as ordinary as the Prince and the Princess of the rivaling ancient Races–the Winter wolves and the Summer leopards–can live. But eventually they learn that not much about their existence can be normal. Especially when the Races’ two commanding Goddesses are involved.

One of the Goddesses is on a quest to tilt the scale of power to her side. The other will never let it happen, even if it means kicking Jatred and Jasmira’s love to the curb. Nothing is off limits, including removing Jatred’s memories of Jasmira.

To complicate things even more, there are the Universe’s powers to consider. They are trapped in an ancient Amulet in order to protect the stability of the world. But the Universe has a mind of its own, and when the powers are unleashed, the forces of nature are disturbed; earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions shake the Earth. All Shifters of both Races are summoned by their respective Goddesses to fight in the name of, or against, the normalcy of the world.

Fifteen year-old Valerie is used to losing things–she lost her dad to his job ages ago and her best friend moved with no warning…and hasn’t been heard from since. During a weekend camping trip with her emotionally distant parents, she stumbles upon a hidden, mysterious stone and she finds herself desperate to keep it, to possess it. Two strange and beautiful boys have other plans, however. They follow her home–Leo, warm and seductive, who covets the stone and will stop at nothing to get it; and Noel, dark-haired and wise, who pledges to protect her and keep her safe.

As she delves deeper into the magic of the stone and the Celtic lore that surrounds it, Valerie realizes that she’s losing. Again. But this loss might involve more than a magical stone – this time, she just might lose her heart.

Gemma Hart never knows when her father is going to whisk her back in time. Her toes start tingling and she has a few minutes to find a secret haven where she can disintegrate and appear in another time and place. While “across the line,” her training and skills are put to the test as she completes a mission that will change history for the lucky few her father has selected.

Gemma’s parents are adamant that secrecy is paramount to her family’s safety. If people knew what they were capable of, they could be “used and abused”, as her mother always says. Afraid she might accidentally utter the truth and break the ancient oath of her people, Gemma spends her school days as a loner. Only one thing can throw her sheltered life askew… Harrison Granger.

Harrison never expected to talk to the strange Hart girl, but after a brief encounter he can’t stop thinking about her. He begins a campaign to chisel away her icy veneer and is met with unexpected consequences. As he slowly wins this girl over, he enters a surreal world that has him fighting to keep his newfound love and his life.

Dirty Blood (Dirty Blood, #1)-Heather Hildenbrand

It took seeing it-up close and personal-for me to believe. And even now, there were two thoughts that were so clear, they felt branded into my mind: one, Werewolves do exist, and two, I was born to kill them.

***

This heat was delicious and dangerous all at once, and I pressed myself harder against him, not wanting it to end. And already feeling a pang of sadness that it would.

Plot: After a particularly irritating date with her boyfriend George, Tara storms out of the bar frustrated and sad. She doesn’t want to lose her long friendship with George but she’s fed up with his cockiness and pushing her feelings aside for his dream football career. Tara wants out and told George just as much. Not wanting to beg George for a ride home and unable to find anyone else, Tara decides to take a back alley she typically uses as a shortcut to the bus stop. The darkness has never bothered Tara but that night the hairs on her body stand at attention, goosebumps invade her skin and she can sense something sinister lurking. Tara sees a girl, shaking violently, unsure what to do, she asks if the girl needs help and is greeted by a menacing, hate-filled glare. Before Tara knows what’s happening the girl in front of her shifts into a wolf. Terrified and startled, Tara can’t believe her eyes but she definitely reacts when the wolf pounces. Tara believes she’s going to die when a strange feeling overwhelms her and her body is reacting to the attack with knowledge that she never knew she had. With a sickening crack, the wolf thuds to the ground and changes back into the girl. When another stranger speaks from the alley, Tara is on guard but is momentarily stunned by the warm eyes that meet her gaze. Tara feels an overwhelming urge to reach out and touch this guy in front of her. Even more puzzled, Tara crashes back into reality and starts to hyperventilate. The next thing she knows, she’s waking up in her bed the next day. Tara is convinced it was all a dream until the gorgeous guy from the alley turns up in her bedroom. Thrust into a world she never guessed existed, Tara is bombarded with lies, danger, and secrets that turn her world on its head. Tara learns the politics of the werewolf/Hunter dynamic, the slurs of mixed bloods, and the consequences of an action long ago that will haunt her family ever after.

PROS:

  • Dirty Blood is an action-packed adventure filled with deceit, violence, gore, and wonderful battle scenes. The descriptions of the fighting, the slashing, the suspense is enough to hook you from the get go.
  • The world of the Hunters and the Werewolves is fueled by politics, prejudice, and murder. The sheer ingrained hatred between the two groups, the horror at hybrids or mixed bloods, and the vile plots on the rebels werewolves are ingenious, multi-layered, and meticulously plotted.
  • Tara is a crafty, dirty fighter. She has a brutal, raw talent that comes from fierce determination and a willingness to fight to the death to protect those she cares about. While Tara is sometimes stubborn to a fault, hot-headed, and too confident on occasion, as her power grows, she becomes a powerful, compelling protagonist. Tara leaps before she looks, jumps headfirst into a fight and takes many punches but never gives up. Because she has not grown up in the Hunter/Werewolf world she is able to see things in an unbiased, clearer way that the characters who have been raised on prejudice, this is refreshing and a great parallel to the plot.
  • Fee, Jack, Cord, and the rest of the crew were each vibrant, unique personalities that really represented the colorful variety of people within the Cause. Fee is that calming, warm mother figure that can bake you brownies and take down a monstrous wolf singlehandedly, she’s kind of badass. Jack is that bear-like father-figure, burly and strong, always calculated and brave. For some reason I picture him like the Brawny man 🙂 Cord is that classic, snotty, catty female that you’re not sure about. She comes off as cold and heartless but flashes of her jaded personality suggest that there just might be something great hidden beneath the hard exterior.
  • Wes is frustrating in that glorious, teasing way. He’s flirty, blunt, sarcastic, and loves to push Tara’s buttons much to her chagrin. But his past is a twisted one, full of heartache and overcoming those who would kill him or kick him when he’s down. Labeled as a dirty blood early on Wes must live with his lineage and become a better person because of it. Wes is a leader, wicked fast and deadly in battle, he plans, coordinates strike teams, and uses his heritage for the greater good of the Cause. When he’s not fighting his feelings, he’s sweet, full of heat and smoldering looks.
  • The chemistry between Wes and Tara is a slow burning fire, magnetic but it’s one that builds into a scorching blaze. No matter how they try to resist their connection, it’s there tempting and taunting.

CONS:

  • There were a few typos and some grammatical issues.
  • The final battle scene was a little random. The characters just disappearing from sight in a split second was a bit unbelievable, where did they go?
