Excerpt

“Where are we?” I ask, looking around at the beauty surrounding me. I don’t know that I’ve been anywhere so calming, so serene. I look out over the view in front of me. When we broke through the trees I was met with grass mixed with rocks and a small pool, fed by a waterfall.

“Xander, this place is beautiful!” I say twirling around before running and jumping into his arms, peppering his face with small, chaste kisses. He twirls me in circles before lowering me back to the ground, then gathering my face in his hands and kissing me. Different this time, deeper, firm but still gentle.

“It is nothing compared to you, but I thought you might like it. I came across it while I was out on my last scout. I saw it and thought of you.” He says, resting his forehead on mine. His lips are so close they tease me, just out of reach, and each moment I crave them more. The butterflies in my stomach take flight and I close my eyes to hide the emotion I know he’ll see there.

“Don’t hide from me Addie. You never have to hide, not from me.” He says gripping my chin. I don’t think I’ve ever been happier than in this moment. “You make me feel again, its been a long time since I could say that. Even if no-one else knows, I always want you to know that I love you. I will love you until my lungs give out. Until there is nothing more than dust on this earth, and long after that still. I will never love again like I love you.”

Review: Crash-Nicole Williams

4/5 Stars

Crash (Crash,#1)-Nicole Williams

Crash by Nicole Williams

It was intoxicating and overwhelming. Deep within, I knew it was marginally unhealthy. A girl should not feel like being totally possessed by a man, but I did. A girl with goals and aspirations should not be able to forget about them the instant a man’s mouth came into contact with hers. This was the first time I’d felt this way-felt even close to this way-and as exciting as it was, it was just as terrifying. My brain recognized this was wrong on some level, but my heart was convinced nothing had ever been so right. When it came to me, a tie always went to the heart, or at least it always had. I really hoped Jude Ryder wouldn’t be the reason that would change.

***

“Honey, a girl can’t keep a man like that as a friend. He’s a lover or an ex-lover, but never a friend. Men like that weren’t created to be a woman’s friend-they were created to make a woman hit high C three times in a row.”

Plot: After the tragic death of her older brother, her father’s spiral into depression resulting in the loss his business which was the family’s main source of income, and her mother’s change into an overbearing, judgemental, dictator, Lucy just wants a shot at normal. When her family is forced to downsize from their usual lifestyle and move permanently to their lake house, Lucy is not excited about starting over at Southpointe High. One day, while tanning and brushing up on her biology for school, Lucy catches a glimpse of a guy straight out of GQ. She’s never seen anyone so deliciously attractive in her life and it seems he’d noticed her too. Lucy was a sucker for romance, she dreamed about her prince charming but realized that that wasn’t realistic. Up until this point, Lucy has never found anyone that she was really drawn to. The stunning guy in the beanie was just what to needed to make her life a little brighter. Lucy tries everything to get his attention, even resorting to dropping her top, European-style sunbathing. Even that didn’t work, or so she thought, when a few minutes later he crashed into her trying to catch a football he and his friends had been tossing around. His smile is as dazzling as the rest of him and Lucy fumbles for words. He introduces himself as Jude Ryder and let’s her know off the bat that he doesn’t do girlfriends, dating, or anything like that, but if she was interesting in a little fun he’d be down. Lucy’s daydream came crashing down as soon as it started. Some playful, hormone-infused banter later and she let’s Jude know that it’d take something really meaningful and big to convince her to hang out with him. Lucy worked at an animal rescue, she brought home a mixed breed that had been through very obvious abuse. Later on Lucy discovers a makeshift kennel built for her to keep the dog with a note asking for a date. Lucy’s heart melts. So begins the twisted, unconventional love story of Lucy and Jude. Jude has a past, one that comes with many scars, a rap sheet, and enough rumors to fuel Lucy’s doubts about the compassionate, wounded guy beneath his bad boy image. Jude comes from a rough, violent crowd. Will Jude’s past be enough to destroy his future with Lucy? Will Lucy be able to overcome her own demons enough to tame his?

PROS:

  • This is a quick read that will consume you from the very first couple pages. It’s witty, funny, crude, and just the right amount of perverse to keep you laughing even when some of the darker elements of the story are revealed.
  • The villains are completely evil, they’re terrifying. There are two scenes in particular that gave me chills. Lucy ends up in dangerous situations because of her bravery and every time she realizes that brute strength is what she needs to escape not the insults that she’s wickedly good at shouting, the anxiety only escalates. If you’re the type of person that can’t read violent scenes then this is not the book for you. What people keep hidden, the personality beneath the outer façade is explored and it’s revealed that even the seemingly nicest person can be dark, and malicious.
  • Lucy’s and Jude’s chemistry is a fiery mix of passion and sexual longing. When they’re together everything fits like two puzzle pieces locking into each other, their personalities and pasts link them and make them whole. The sweltering intensity of their connection will spark lazy, sated smiles, and hope that their love can make it through their traumatic pasts.
  • There are several Beatles references and applications to the story line through lyrics. Lucy is named after “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and Jude is, of course, named after “Hey Jude.” Some people may find this cheesy and unnecessary but I think it’s quirky in all the right ways. I’m not a Beatles fan but those who are will appreciate the connections.
  • There’s a huge plot twist that you will not see coming. Be prepared to be shocked.

CONS:

  • Lucy makes ridiculous assumptions, throws them in people’s faces and doesn’t wait for explanations. She has a somewhat cocky, devil-may-care attitude that makes her different from her peers but is still part of the popular crowd, on the dance team, and one of the homecoming princesses. No matter how much she wants to believe she’s unique, she’s connected to a lot of those overly clichéd high school cliques.
  • Jude’s jaded and his angry aggressive nature is very scary at times. So much so that you never know when he’ll snap. He uses violence and threats as an answer for everything, unafraid to hurt those around him with force and even his words. Lucy and Jude both make stupid decisions and leave things left unsaid that jeopardize their lives (in one case almost literally) and their love.
