In Mary Fan’s second novella from Glass House Press, a teen girl wakes up in an icy cell, alone and frightened. She has no memory of who she is or how she came to be there.

She does know that she must get out, at all costs. And that escape must start with remembering the simple things – her own name. Her place of origin. Her possible powers.

When a group of dark magicians reveal themselves to be her captors, she finds herself in the clutches of those who will stop at nothing to uncover the secrets locked within her lost memories. With her life fading under their merciless spells, the need to escape becomes dire.

But can she get out when she doesn’t even know who she is? Can she count on one unlikely ally for help? Or is it already too late for her, a girl without a name?

Tell Me My Name introduces the main characters in Mary’s new fantasy series, Fated Stars, with the first book, Windborn, due in late 2015.

Mary Fan is a hopeless dreamer, whose mind insists on spinning tales of “what if.” As a music major in college, she told those stories through compositions. Now she tells them through books—a habit she began as soon as she could pick up a pencil. Flynn Nightsider and the Edge of Evil follows a well-received debut novel, a space opera titled Artificial Absolutes (2013), and is the first in the Flynn Nightsider series. Mary would like to think that there are many other novels in her bag, and hopes to prove that to the world as well.

Mary lives in New Jersey and has a B.A. from Princeton University. When she’s not scheming to create new worlds, she enjoys kickboxing, opera singing, and blogging about everything having to do with books.

Telepaths, torture, mindwipes … the Institute has it all, and they use each of their brainwashed children as weapons, the way they see fit. To control society, repress its people. To make certain that they stay in power, no matter the cost. Serena’s baby brother Damon is one of those children, and these days he’s so altered that he doesn’t even recognize her.

When it comes to getting Damon away from those who kidnapped him, there’s nothing Serena won’t do. Even if she has to kill him to save him. First, though, she must prove to her father that she has what it takes to be a soldier against the insidious threat of the Institute. Her first mission has to be perfect.

But with inaccurate intelligence, unexpected storms, and Gav Belias, people’s hero of the Watch, on the prowl, will she even survive? If she doesn’t succeed, they’ll never let her go after her brother.

And that would be unthinkable, when it was her fault that he was taken in the first place.

Slam is Tash McAdam’s first work with Glass House Press, and serves as a prequel to her series The Psionics, with the first book, Maelstrom, due in 2015.

cooltext1718191953 copyTash McAdam’s first writing experience (a collaborative effort) came at the age of eight, and included passing floppy discs back and forth with a best friend at swimming lessons. Since then, Tash has spent time falling in streams, out of trees, learning to juggle, dreaming about zombies, dancing, painting, learning Karate, becoming a punk rock pianist, and of course, writing.

Tash is a teacher in real life, but dreams of being a full-time writer, and living a life of never-ending travel. Though born in the hilly sheepland of Wales, Tash has lived in South Korea and Chile and now calls Vancouver, Canada home.

Maelstrom, the first book in The Psionics, is Tash’s first published work. Visit the website or facebook for news, gossip, and random tidbits about Tash’s adventures.

ARC Review: The Runaway House-Courtney Parker

I received this eARC as a gift in exchange for an honest review via Courtney Parker.

cooltext1544204149 copy

Kade looks and acts like a runaway. And with his parents breathing down his neck about college applications and baseball scholarships, he almost wishes he were one. So when Agent Boone approaches him with the opportunity to go undercover and disappear, Kade can’t believe his luck.

Sightings of high-profile missing kids from all over the country have poured in through the years in the small, old-timey towns of Jessup, Martin, and Clydesville. The tips turn up nothing, but the townsfolk tell tales of an old, possibly haunted, house set deep in the woods that separate the towns. Kade is given one mission: to find the house and, if the kids are there, to convince them he’s one of them.

In the three-story, Victorian-style house surrounded by nothing but miles of woods, Kade enjoys his stress-free days and finds himself wanting to abort the mission and just live this new life with new people who expect nothing of him. Yeah, Ian—the guy in charge—has it out for him for some reason and says he’s not allowed to leave the house, but why would he want to anyway? Still, he can’t help but wonder where Ian goes every day when he wanders off into the woods. Quickly, Kade realizes that he is not the only one with a secret, and he must take it upon himself to crack a case much bigger than the one he signed up for. Especially if he wants to ever get himself and the kids out alive.

3/5 Stars

The Runaway House by Courtney Parker is a gripping, heart-stopping mystery. Suspicion is high and the stakes are even higher as more and more abducted children appear in a clandestine house on the outskirts of a small town. As Kade scrambles to unravel the end game and uncover the mastermind behind the abductions, he discovers that nothing is cut and dry and that everything he thought he knew is just another elaborate piece of the puzzle.

  • The Runaway House is a book that you can’t put down, that you’re constantly flipping through to get to the next big reveal. The mystery will drive you forward in an anxious, edge-of-your-seat, nail-biting euphoria. Questions only spur further subquestions and lead to countless possibilities but nothing will prepare you for the plot twist.
  • The box. This was the most despicable, horrifyingly abusive and sick form of torture I’ve read because it was so subtle. There’s so much left to the reader to imagine that the terror is magnified. The small details will pulse in your mind, begging you to put the clues together with just as much skill as Kade. You’ll be desperate to save these children from this monstrous fate.
  • Kade is a determined, sweetheart of a guy. He goes out of his way to help people, he’s a hero at its finest because he doesn’t know just how wonderful he is. Kade puts his life on the line and jumps in harms way to save the children from pain both physical and emotional. He’s also an expert at thinking on his feet, which makes him perfect for this covert job. The playful, compassionate way he treats the children will put a big smile on your face.
  • The climax scene is an adrenaline rush. The violence and urgency add to the thrill of the entire story and brings everything together with one final, resounding explosion of suspense.

  • Although there are brief mentions of a ransom/abduction scam as an explanation for the children living in the Runaway house, the general motivations behind the abductions are unclear, even at the end of the book.
  • Some sections were extremely slow without much character or plot development. It’s also a little unbelievable that Kade, a newcomer, can navigate the creepy woods, flee to town, and get back without getting caught every time, especially when the children who utilize those woods daily have been captured and punished. It just didn’t add up.
  • A few of the characters fell flat. There wasn’t much to them by way of personality, they were pretty basic, bare bones, foundational sketches without any unique, fully developed personalities.

If you like any of the following, you’ll enjoy this:
