I have loved reading since I was old enough to do it. I started writing in my down time in 2006 and have been doing it ever since.

Reading, writing, and hanging out with my family are some of my favorite things – along with hot chocolate and pizza (not together, of course).

With a bachelors in Accounting, writing has been a great way to unwind and let my imagination fly.

ARC Review: The Halfling by H.D. Gordon

Being seventeen and an outcast is hard. Being seventeen and only half human is harder.

When Aria Fae gets cast out of the Peace Brokers, a secret supernatural organization that’s trained her since infancy, and is left to fend for herself in the human world, she finds herself in Grant City, intent on attempting a normal human life.

As a Halfling, Aria has abilities that are a little underused in the flower shop she lands a job at. And when her new friend Samantha Shy enlists Aria to help investigate her mother’s death, the two girls decide to become vigilantes.

A new drug called Black Magic is running rampant in the streets of Grant City, turning people into supercharged maniacs. With Sam’s mad computer skills, and Aria’s Faevian abilities, they may be just the heroes Grant City is in need of.

Or they may find out they’re in way over their heads, and their mutual crush on the same guy is the least of their worries.

The Halfling is an interesting twist on half-fae, much in the vein of Melissa Marr’s latest Seven Black Diamonds. X-Men meets paranormal magic, The Halfling is a thrilling, action-packed read that leaves you rallying for justice.

PROS:

  • The story has a lot going on. Half-fae, sorceresses, a secret paranormal agency, human trafficking, hackers, and a horrifying new drug that makes users want to feed on flesh.
  • Secondary characters are intriguing and make you want to know more about them. I loved that there were nerdy, tech obsessed BFFs that used their genius to make the coolest inventions and turn Aria into a fantastic super heroine. Samantha is awesome. Bullied but not defeated. She uses her mind and though she has some insecurity, it’s endearing. She can’t talk to guys to save her life and it’s hilarious.
  • Aria is independent, courageous, fierce, and basically a crime fighting superhero. She takes risks and puts her life on the line to save the victims of human trafficking and other crimes throughout the city but at the same time, despite her fae powers, she’s just a teenage girl looking to belong. She doesn’t know how to deal with boys, she gets embarrassed, she abruptly leaves weird situations, and the tension is high but it’s very relatable.
  • The chemistry. It’s all over the place. That neighbor. I’m not sure how to feel about it because he’s much older and sometimes seems like a fatherly figure/knight in shining armor, but oh man is he sexy. Former military, gorgeous, mysterious, and always comes to the rescue, what’s not to swoon over? There is some triangular action going on with the hot prep school boy whose father owns half the town but he’s flirty, playful, and has a big heart. You’ll feel for Aria because they’re both pretty perfect.

CONS:

  • This felt more like the continuation of a series than the first book. So many key facts about Aria’s past were alluded to but never expanded on. Like the situation with her mother, a clearer picture of why she was banished, and who exactly her enemies were are all lacking in explanation.
  • Focus gets lost somewhere between the superhero antics, Aria’s past, and the romantic tension. I’m not sure where the story was trying to go. Sometimes it felt like a pure romance, other times para, and others superhero adventure. The connection was loose.
  • Some parts were predictable.

***I received this eARC as a gift in exchange for an honest review via Amazon Skyscape & NetGalley

This review was a long time coming. Partially because I have so many books to read but also because no matter how many times I tried to focus on the story, it felt a little tedious. I wanted to fall head over heels because what’s not to love? New Orleans, witches, vampires, werewolves, all that angst, diary entries, the big bad mystery, and yet, the story fell flat.

Here’s what I loved (PROS):

  • The atmosphere. New Orleans post-Storm comes to life with vivid, haunting clarity. You feel the smoky magic and mystery saturating the muggy weather. The devastation and destruction are powerful and moving. There are brief moments of social commentary on the government response and aid. There’s this sense of a city sleeping, just waiting to be awakened. Much like the vampires.
  • Characters, for the most part, are quirky, diverse, and unique. They all have that particular NOLA strangeness that reads as eccentric and unforgettable. Drag queens, LGBT characters, people of color. It’s all there in beautiful glory and variety.
  • Diary entries. WOW. They totally transport you to 18th century France and some island settlements, as well as early Louisiana before it was officially established. As a historian, the Casquette girls, the aristocracy, the treatment of slaves, all of it will awaken you to another time.
  • Mystery propels the plot forward. You’ll want to know the reason behind all the spooky things happening around Adele and to the city.
  • Isaac is smoking hot. He’s mysterious, artistic, a little brooding, and a lot sexy. He is attentive and flirty with Adele and she’s just NOT having it. Mind BLOWN.The chemistry is there. Like an epiphany.

Here’s what I disliked (CONS):

  • Adele is an interesting character but in many ways, not as compelling as some of the minor characters. She’s kind of boring and impulsive. She grows on you. It seemed like she was lacking in development. I wanted to know more about her likes, her dislikes, what makes her Adele and not some random girl on the street. Even her friendships were loosely inserted and then sort of fizzled out (Brooke and the twins).
  • The story is convoluted and complex. At times the pieces kind of get muddled.
  • The pacing is slow. Oh, so slow. The book drags on forever. I felt like the story would never end. There are several parts that might have been shortened to keep the reader engaged but instead, I found myself getting bored and putting the book down.
  • Adele’s obsession with Nicco is bizarre and a bit random. It seems to come out of nowhere. There’s not enough interaction for them to feel so crazy, compulsively strong. Borderline INSTALOVE.
  • Many questions were left unanswered.

He had no idea what I did…the hurt that I caused. The pain that tore me to pieces, reminding me of that night. I was the self-destructive, wild child, with a haunted past who ruined lives and pushed people away. I was out of control and no good for him, but he still looked at me as if I was light when all I was, was darkness. His strange, unique, orange eyes lingered on me, as if he could see deep into my soul. There was a calmness that settled in me whenever he was near, taming the wild beast that I had become. Eli wanted me, Paige Jacobs, and there was no escaping him.

Until I met Silas.

There was something about him that drew me to him; something in his eyes that mesmerized me. He was beauty and perfection wrapped up in one, and I was drunk in lust. He was like a magnet, pulling me right in, and I was completely trapped in his gaze, unable to look away. Even though I was warned of the dangers that came with his kind, I found myself getting sucked into his mysterious and seductive world.

I was falling for both supernatural creatures, who would stop at nothing to have me, and in the end, one of us wasn’t making it out alive.

Excerpt     I then saw Andie, frantic and crying, shove the drapes to the side and begin to run out of the booth when Ellis grabbed her by the arm and yanked her back in.

I gasped as my stomach dropped. “Andie!”
I shoved past the crowd on the dance floor, trying to get to her as fast as I could. Oh, God. Andie. He was hurting her! I knew there was something off with him. I should have went with my gut feeling and kept Andie away from him.
No screams came from behind the drapes as I neared the booth. I pulled the drapes back, and a scream soared through my windpipes as I jumped back from fear and total shock. Andie was in his arms, and his lips were enclosed around her shoulder as blood ran down her back. My head was spinning with so many thoughts. My mind couldn’t even begin to comprehend why he was biting her.
His eyes, so cold and devoid of emotion, bore into mine as he moved his mouth off her shoulder and threw her down in the booth. My mouth fell open and I took a step back, panicked and hyperventilating. He had long, pointy teeth. Fangs that were coated in Andie’s blood, and I knew I was next. I had to get Andie and get the hell out of there.
As he lunged forward, I screamed and swung my hand, slapping him in the face, but my hit did no good to fend him off. As his hand flew up to strike me, I moved out of harm’s way, ducking and running behind him, just escaping his wrath. My shaking hands grabbed the centerpiece from the table and turned around to strike him. Just as I was about to smash it over his head, his quick reflexes were way faster than my own as he grabbed the vase and with one effortless squeeze of his hand, the vase smashed into pieces. I brought my knee up, aiming for his groin, but he caught my leg. I gasped as he was suddenly knocked into me and I fell back on the table. Silas, with fury on his face, came up behind Ellis, grabbing him by the hair and throwing him back on the floor. As Ellis began to stand, Silas kicked him in the face, his head flying to the side as I heard his neck break.
My frantic heart slammed against my chest as I took in a breath, trying to calm myself when all I wanted to do was scream and cry. My brain had yet to accept what I had just been through.
As Silas began to search Ellis’ pockets, I went to Andie. She was lying face down and, as much as I was afraid to touch her, I knew I had to see if she was still alive. I didn’t want to face losing another friend. My eyes flooded with tears as I looked down at my friend, lying there unmoving and helpless. As I hesitantly reached down to feel her pulse, Silas grabbed my arm and spun me around, facing him.
“You have to leave.” His voice was urgent and demanding.
He kept his hand clasped around my arm while he pulled me out of the booth, forcing me to walk. He was taking me away from Andie. I couldn’t let him. I had to get her out of here.
“No!” I tried to pry my arm out of his hold, but his grip was too strong and secure to free myself.
He paid no attention to me while he continued to drag me through the crowded club. It wasn’t until after we were outside did he let go of me. Furious and upset that he took me away from Andie when she needed me the most, I slapped him, feeling the sting from the contact on my hand.
“That’s my best friend in there!”
I turned around to walk back inside when he gripped my arm and pushed me up against the wall, his eyes ablaze with frustration and anger as he scowled.
     “Do you want to die?”
“I don’t care. I’m not leaving my best friend in there!”
“Your best friend is dead. I’m not letting you go back in there. The only reason you survived was because he claimed you.” He grabbed the necklace and held it up. “You were his property. Not to be eaten by anyone but him. You were the bait swimming in an ocean filled with sharks.”
So that was what this club was. A place for vampires to lure their prey to and feed off them.
I shook my head and looked down as dread poisoned my insides. I knew Ellis wasn’t a good guy and I did nothing to stop us from going with him. I shoved the feeling aside and let her convince me that I was only being paranoid because of what I had been through last night. I went along, thinking that I could protect her if I needed to, and failed her. Now my best friend was dead.
The knife that was embedded in my heart was slowly twisting, sending waves of pain throughout my body as it slammed me in the pit of my stomach. My gut felt heavy, filled with so much misery that it hurt to even breathe. I wanted to cry. I could feel the pressure to release my sorrows build, so I swallowed the pain, refusing to let myself cry in front of Silas.
The door to the club swung open and two men, one with sandy blond hair and the other brown with the same blue eyes as Ellis, stormed out of the club.
“What do you think you’re doing? You know no humans are spared here, so hand her over now!” the brunette said.
Silas exhaled as he looked behind him then averted his gaze back to me. “Two on one; I better change for this fight.”
Confused, I shook my head. Change into what? “What?”
My eyes widened as his eyes turned blood red and a pair of small horns came out of his temples. I jumped, gasping in horror as bat like wings flew out from behind his back. They were black and green. Just like his hair. What in the hell was he? I pressed myself up against the wall even more than I already was, afraid of the creature that stood before me. I had to remind myself that he was the good guy and I wasn’t his target.

READ THIS BOOK IF:

  • You’re looking for something quick and entertaining (this is just over 100 pages)
  • You’re a sucker for the classic vampires vs werewolves conflict
  • You watch The Vampire Diaries, Bitten, or Twilight

PROS:

  • Secondary characters were full of personality and quirks, so much so that it outshone the main characters. I found myself leaning towards characters like Brent, Bevin, Carter and even the vicious Sheridan.
  • The vampire in the woods is intense. That scene was a total adrenaline rush made of terror and attraction. It was PERFECT. He’s deep, talks about serious things, thinks things through before he speaks, and that sort of broody, flirty charm is there to sweep you off your feet. He’s not merely looks, it’s his sincerity, his willingness to listen that makes him attractive.
  • Just short enough to leave you hungry for more and long enough to suck you in.

CONS:

  • The plot was predictable and lacked any twists or surprises. What should have been a big reveal was easily called from the beginning of the story or if you read the synopsis (I didn’t beforehand).
  • Regan and Charlie were hard to root for and even harder to get to know despite being told from each of their POVs. So much focus is placed on the situation that the tiny details that make their personalities were missing. Their preferences, how they feel about basic things like clothes or music, anything like that was strangely absent. It’s like they had no life before this moment in time and nothing to attach them to the world. Charlie and Regan are crazy oblivious to what is right in front of them. It’s all sorts of frustrating.

There was a time when I lived for the pack, when I would do anything to save my people. The white wolves were slowly reducing in number, and now everyone was desperate, struggling to make ends meet before we were wiped into extinction. I was twenty-four years old, and a daughter of the Northern pack alpha. It was my duty to continue my lineage. The only problem was, there were no other unmated alphas around other than my best friend, Sebastian, and the supreme douche, Kade Whitemore.

There was no way in hell I was going to alliance myself with that rat bastard. He was alpha of the Yukon pack, violent, and an overbearing ass who’d rather see me on my back with my legs spread open than being his equal. I’d rather die than be forced to be his mate for all eternity. Why couldn’t I mate with Sebastian? Thinking of fucking him gave me the willies, but anything was better than Kade.

Anger racked my body and I sat there, seething . . . until I felt him. He was coming for me; I could sense him drawing near. The closer we got to the meadow, the more I could smell Kade and his excitement—his lust. Hopefully, he could smell the rage and disgust coming from me.
