Blog Tour & Review: Run-Gillian Zane

cooltext1889161239 copyZombies are on the loose in New Orleans and of all the End of the World scenarios, Alexis Winter wasn’t prepared for this one. But, an apocalypse is an apocalypse and she should have this covered. She has been “prepping” for the last three years. The problem is location and timing. She’s stuck downtown and she has to get to her house on the outskirts of the city so she can get her supplies and bug-in (for the “non-preppers” this means hole up and stay safe).

Agreeing to work on a Saturday is now coming back to bite her on the ass big time. Hopefully, it won’t be a literal bite by the walking dead.

Luck favors the prepared, and as luck would have it, it comes in the form of the ridiculously hot Blake Miller. Former military man, current mercenary, Blake Miller, the man with the plan, his goal: steal a boat and trek up the Mississippi until they find safety. Alexis thinks this is a great plan and she decides to team up with Blake. The two team up in unexpected ways as they find they can’t keep their hands off of each other even when the world is falling down around them.

Can Alexis and Blake survive the end of the world, and if they do make it through the night, find a place that is safe and secure? Can their newfound attraction lead them down the road to love or heartbreak?

Zombies, sex, romance and carnage…you can’t get any better than this.

cooltext1889171582 copy3/5 Stars

***I received this ebook as a gift in exchange for an honest review and with participation in this tour.

  • The pace is fast, the story zooms along as the Alexis and Blake give into their base, carnal urges. The romance propels the plot forward that it becomes more love story than apocalyptic thriller.
  • Blake and Alexis have instantaneous, undeniable chemistry that melts off the pages. It’s sexy, explicit, and will make you blush.
  • The military set up and the security guys were memorable. They had personality and kinky preferences that are comical and engaging.

  • The sex scenes while scorching hot almost feel like filler there are so many of them.
  • There wasn’t enough zombie on human carnage. The adrenaline was way down because of the spacing. Inserting a sex scene in every other chapter in a book this short distracted from the fear and anxiety that should have been there.
  • There was tons of sexual description, graphic and detailed but the other elements were neglected. I have no clue what most characters look like other than hair color and being hot, the violence wasn’t as gory as I expected from a zombie book.

cooltext1889178114 copyGillian Zane has been writing fiction stories since she was first able to put pen to paper. She has published a few non-fiction books in her field of study, which is Art, but finally, after all, these years her first fiction novella is being released. Gillian is obsessed with anything that gives her a thrill and feels adding romance to any storyline is a good thing. She was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. She lives with her husband, too many animals in a little house that has way too many books.

Review: Bone Gap-Laura Ruby

cooltext1889161239 copyEveryone knows Bone Gap is full of gaps—gaps to trip you up, gaps to slide through so you can disappear forever. So when young, beautiful Roza went missing, the people of Bone Gap weren’t surprised. After all, it wasn’t the first time that someone had slipped away and left Finn and Sean O’Sullivan on their own. Just a few years before, their mother had high-tailed it to Oregon for a brand new guy, a brand new life. That’s just how things go, the people said. Who are you going to blame?

Finn knows that’s not what happened with Roza. He knows she was kidnapped, ripped from the cornfields by a dangerous man whose face he cannot remember. But the searches turned up nothing, and no one believes him anymore. Not even Sean, who has more reason to find Roza than anyone, and every reason to blame Finn for letting her go.

As we follow the stories of Finn, Roza, and the people of Bone Gap—their melancholy pasts, their terrifying presents, their uncertain futures—acclaimed author Laura Ruby weaves a heartbreaking tale of love and loss, magic and mystery, regret and forgiveness—a story about how the face the world sees is never the sum of who we are.

cooltext1889171582 copy3/5 Stars

Bone Gap is a bizarre and gritty tale about perception, growing up, and learning to see beyond the surface of a person into what makes them unique.

  • Bone Gap perfectly captures the power of gossip and perception in a small town. The way that labels have a life of their own and are continued through constant use. The people of the town adore nicknames that function as stigmas, they dictate how each character lives their life and it’s hard to escape once this mask is placed on them. In Bone Gap, what the town thinks of you can make or break your life there and shackle you to a very limited concept of self.
  • The characters are intriguing and diverse. They each have unique, memorable personalities (though I would have liked to have seen more character interactions). From bee tamers to vivacious Polish girls, each character has a story that you’ll want to hear.
  • I appreciate books that I can learn from and Bone Gap had several quirky facts that I’d never heard about before. The psychological condition of face blindness for one, the foods and customs of Poland, and the complex art of beekeeping all drew me into the story.
  • Alternating POVs flip-flopped between past and present. Hearing Roza’s story propelled the mystery forward and left many things uncertain.

  • Bone Gap is, at times, extremely slow to the point of losing interest. The story is a portrait of small town life and while it can be boring in nature, the mystery kind of got lost in the mundane monotony of everyday life.
  • Some sections were so strange and borderline psychotic that it hit magical realism and sounded like an entirely different book. The plot was sporadic and chaotic, jumping from the slow and steady flow of the little town to this creepy fantasy land. It was unexpected but not in the best way-it was jarring and cut into the story, I had to step back and reread to make sure I didn’t miss a pivotal change.
  • The ending was over quickly and so random. There was no explanation to cops or anything like that, it was brushed under the rug. It didn’t add up.

Release Day Blitz & Blog Tour: Beautiful Elixir-Addison Moore

Beautiful Elixir (Beautiful Oblivion Book 3)
Genre: New Adult/Contemporary Romance
Release Day: June 22, 2015
The sharper the lies, the darker the secrets…

Kennedy is mine. Too many tortured years have gone by without her, and I’m not about to let another one slip by. There’s nothing that’s going to keep us apart this time, not my psychotic family, not hers, not the tornado that’s ripping through her life or the one that’s ripping through mine. I want to help her with the destruction that’s shredding her to pieces. I think I’m the only one who can. I know she’s the only one who can help save me. I want to open up my heart to her, tell her everything I’ve done, but that’s the one thing I can never do. Some things in life are best left unsaid.

Caleb McCarthy is back in Loveless, turning heads, melting hearts and breaking them. We had a few sultry summers together, way back when. Those stolen nights were our treasured secret. But now he’s here, ready to take the next step with me just as my life burns to cinders. Our timing was never good. Someone has lifted the lid off Pandora’s Box and my every worst nightmare is floating around cyberspace. I’m laid bare for all to see. Naked. Exposed in every way. All of the secrets I thought I’d take to the grave are filtering out one by one, and I need to find a way put the lid back, to bury the box, before the darkest part of my soul is exposed—no one can know what I’ve done. No one can know and now the lid is off and my worst nightmare is slowly floating its way to the surface.

I don’t know who they are or what they want, but they need to be stopped. There’s only one person who can help me and that’s Caleb McCarthy. But it turns out Caleb has a few secrets of his own. Sometimes I’m not so sure if Caleb is on my side or if he’s been the enemy all along. I’m not so sure if I’ve brought us closer together or if I’ve just damned us both and blown our world’s apart.

Kennedy’s every worst nightmare is coming true.

Caleb’s are just beginning.

cooltext1889161239 copyHow can Ava Starr’s worst nightmare be Dax Miller’s dream come true?

For the past three years, Dax has been stranded on Lamarai Island with his stepsister and two tribes of cannibals. But now a beautiful girl named Ava has washed up on shore. After secretly reading her journal, he believes she is a perfect match to the girl of his dreams. He’s determined not only to keep her alive, but also to win over her heart by convincing her to forget about her past and the secrets that continue to haunt her.

Ava Starr has always been the epitome of bad luck, but she never imagined she would wake up and find herself on a cannibal-infested island with no memory of how she got there. The last thing she remembers is boarding a plane with her pilot boyfriend, Preston. But now he and his crew are missing, and she must find him before a tribe of hungry cannibals finds him first. But Ava’s troubles have followed her to Lamarai, where once again she’s surrounded by danger and people who want her dead. She finds herself caught in a web of deceit and soon discovers the answers to her mysterious past can be found in the most unlikely of places, and that no one is actually who they seem to be.

cooltext1921345213 copyWith a satisfied grin, I drop the book in my pocket and step out from behind the tree.

“Well, well, well. What a predicament. Gives new meaning to the phrase ‘sticky situation’ doesn’t it?” My voice startles her and causes a sharp intake of breath as she opens her eyes.

“Dax,” she says with a relieved exhale.

“Hey princess.” I give her my best Cheshire smile. “Looks like your little escape plan didn’t work out so well, huh? Well, I hope you have better luck escaping from that pit of quicksand.”

I turn to walk away.

“Wait! Where are you going?” she asks, and desperation oozes from her voice.

I pause to get control of the amusement cracking away at my serious expression before turning around. “I don’t know. I think I’ll head back to the beach and wait for a hot blonde to wash up on shore.” Her mouth falls open right on cue. “Oh, and sorry to break it to ya’, but you didn’t get the part. Since it’s my fantasy, I was looking for someone friendlier, a little more trusting, a little less sassy, and what was the last thing? Oh, yeah. Someone who actually likes me. But don’t feel bad—you nailed the physical profile,” I say with a wink.

“Stop being a jerk and help me,” she says, and then softens her tone. “Please?”

I uncross my arms and rest my hands on my hips. I’m pretty sure she already regrets that last comment, but I can’t stop now. “Look, princess. I’m a lot of things, but a jerk isn’t one of them. And don’t worry; I’m sure someone else will find you soon. A hungry cannibal—or Roxy. And I’m starting to think you and her might make a good team. The pity-party duo. She’s hateful, complains constantly, and she’s also a member of the ‘I hate Dax club’, just like you.”

I turn my back on her again and take a step.

“Wait! I don’t hate you. Please don’t leave me. I’m sorry.”

I’m a sucker for apologies but when I turn to face her, I can’t resist putting one hand behind my ear and tilting my head.

“I’m really sorry,” she says again. “For running away and being so grumpy.” I wait for more, and she grits her teeth. “And for not listening to you.”

This is the part where I know she expects me to jump to her rescue, but I lean against a tree with a cocky grin and pull a banana from my pocket. She stares while I peel it, take a bite, and chew slowly. I’m savoring the fruit but also my triumph in having the upper hand.

“Aren’t you going to help me?” she finally asks with a hint of worry.

“I’m still debating. If I leave you here, at least I’ll know where you are and won’t have to worry about you running off. I could even build a little hut around you and toss you food and water now and then. You’d be a lot less trouble that way.”

“Very funny,” she says, but I think it is and I can’t keep from laughing.

cooltext1889178114 copyShannon-Maynard

Shannon L. Maynard lives in Colorado with her five girls where she is a legal assistant by day and an author by night. In between working and writing she can be found driving kids to soccer, folding mountains of pink laundry, or eating her weight in chocolate. Other addictions include shoe shopping, reading YA, and Australian and British accents (which may be partly to blame for her massive crush on Thor). If she had one wish it would be for more hours in the day to spend enjoying all of the above. Okay, everything except the laundry.

Shannon studied art and criminology before getting a license in cosmetology, but eventually wound up an expert daydreamer; a skill that occasionally leads to getting lost while driving, but has been a huge asset to her love for writing. Her debut novel WICKED LUCK is set to release June 2015 and is the first book in the Wicked Luck Trilogy.

Review: Saint Anything-Sarah Dessen

cooltext1790897456 copyPeyton, Sydney’s charismatic older brother, has always been the star of the family, receiving the lion’s share of their parents’ attention and—lately—concern. When Peyton’s increasingly reckless behavior culminates in an accident, a drunk driving conviction, and a jail sentence, Sydney is cast adrift, searching for her place in the family and the world. When everyone else is so worried about Peyton, is she the only one concerned about the victim of the accident?

Enter the Chathams, a warm, chaotic family who run a pizza parlor, play bluegrass on weekends, and pitch in to care for their mother, who has multiple sclerosis. Here Sydney experiences unquestioning acceptance. And here she meets Mac, gentle, watchful, and protective, who makes Sydney feel seen, really seen, for the first time.

The uber-popular Sarah Dessen explores her signature themes of family, self-discovery, and change in her twelfth novel, sure to delight her legions of fans.

cooltext1790896132 copy3/5 Stars

Saint Anything is an eclectic coming of age story that tests the bonds of family and friendship.

  • Living in the shadow of an older sibling is explored with startling clarity and honesty. The complex relationship between Sydney, Peyton, and her parents is plagued with guilt, misunderstanding, and invisibility. Sydney is crying out to be seen and all anyone sees her as is a shade of her brother, secondary, a cast off. Her needs are subject to her brothers temper tantrums and her mother’s efforts to please him. It’s no wonder Sydney yearns for a change of scenery. Sydney does everything in her power to be on the straight and narrow, to make her parents proud and when she does make a tiny mistake it’s magnified because of her brother’s history. It’s unfair and hurtful but it’s her reality and something that many younger siblings can identify with.
  • Dialogue flowed with light and laughter one moment and seriousness the next. One of Sarah Dessen’s writer super powers is capturing the everyday with authenticity and a new eye. The scenes with band members and at lunch were real, something you could easily walk into at a high school.
  • Layla is like a magical rainbow of joy. She’s weird and quirky but mostly she’s awesome. She has a flair and personality that draws you in, she feels bigger than the story, bigger than her tiny body. Mac is sweet, honest, and thoughtful. He looks at the world like an engineer, he thinks long and hard before he speaks, constantly observing. Each character has a past and something that haunts them but they don’t let it rule them.
  • Saint Anything is about self-discovery, finding out who you are beneath all the expectations and assumptions. Sydney must sift through her brothers mistakes to find the girl she is and who she wants to be. The pressure to be perfect, to lead an exemplary life, to put her own needs aside to keep the peace and no stress her parents is all like a veil over her personality. Through reclaiming herself, Sydney is able to forgive, accept, and love.

  • Sydney’s interactions with her brother are painful and brief. The sibling dynamic is largely one-sided and we don’t get Peyton’s perspective on anything. Sometimes Sydney’s view of her brother feels harsh and exaggerated.  Peyton reads like a spoiled, entitled brat who has no redeeming qualities. For someone who admired her brother so much her disillusionment is bleak and at times, too strong.
  • Parts dragged where not much was happening and relationships developed in summaries. I would have liked more physical interactions between characters, especially when it came to romance. While the attraction was there, chemistry was lacking. They seemed more like friends than anything else and when romantic scenes happened, the heat was absent.
  • It was hard to connect Sydney’s old life with her new one and to feel the sincerity of her friendships. Scenes with her old friends felt random and forced, because there wasn’t much interaction between them or memories, whether or not they were active in Sydney’s life wasn’t important.
